I recently wondered why they are still there. Its pretty obvious Dalamud isnt stopping now.

Lets watch the meteor explode and tear apart our ships!

FFXIV's real mystery is how they got so advanced in the first place.

    LOL, thats a great question.

I put the blame at the feet of Nael van Darnus - who is certifiably insane.
    • He assigns units of troops to a spot near Ul'dah and apparently order them to wait around until they get slaughtered by rag-tag adventurers
    • He has squads that are assigned to do nothing more than hang out in the back rooms of Dzemael Darkhold
    • He could destroy all the aetheryte crystals which are vital assets to those who keep attacking him, but strangely he doesn't - it's not like his troops ever use them.
    • His master plan involves calling Dalamud to come down and completely obliterate Eorzea (the land he wants to conquer)... Then he builds a heavily armed, and fully stocked base in the middle of Mor Dhona rather than up in the sky where it can be moved when Dalamud hits.
    • Stranger yet, it looks (in the trailer) as though the Empire sends in 10,000s of troops to wage an all out war against the Eorzean nations WHILE Dalamud is destroying everything.

I don't know how the story will eventually turn out in ARR, but it seems Emperor Solus zos Galvus still wants to rule the world. Fortunately, Gaius van Baelsar realizes that by destroying it, you haven't really accomplished much -- put that guy in charge.
