Oh yeah.. Prolly should have mentioned that there are specific slots for every class that cannot be enhanced by materia..
You'll pretty much never find a decent pair of Materia Melded Lancer's Boots..

how would this destroy gathering? you need to make the item to put materia into it, so you gather, right? xDThis would leave one issue: Gatherers. If everyone gets their gear through dungeons, that's a significant chunk of gathering work you're throwing away. I genuinely think that SE have it right at the moment.
Put it this way: I'm a crafter, as is my girlfriend. We both really want darklight gear. Yes, some triple and quadruple melds are better, but with the price of the materia and the likelihood of losing untold amounts of gil being lost blowing things up, can we afford to triple/quadruple meld? No. So dungeon gear still has it's place. Maybe people with 50,000,000 gil to throw about can afford the effective triple or more melded gear, and perhaps those people will complain that it's too easy to get good crafted gear instead of darklight gear. But for most people, this is an unrealistic amount to pay for gear. They're better off finding a good group of people and having fun trying to get the drop that will make their gear that little bit better.
Crafters should have their endgame, too. This can be making triple or quad melds. The odds of getting darklight drops may be poor, but the time taken to not only make high level melded crafts but also to get the gil to buy the materia/mats for a hundred attempts may take a crafter longer than it takes you to get that drop.
There is a little Monkey in all of us....

Snurble here in your thread~!
I wanted to give you some details on what's being planned for stats in A Realm Reborn.
In regards to battle-related stats, it is currently possible to receive large boosts from stats on equipment, while character stats do not have as much of an effect. For example, equipping items with multiple materia melded to it will allow players to become quite powerful. In A Realm Reborn, we are planning to make adjustments so that the ratio of influence from character stats and from gear stats is 1:1. With this, having 5 materia melded onto a single item won’t elicit as large of a difference like it does currently.
Similarly in the current version, even when players add large amounts of INT and STR via equipment with multiple materia and such, it may feel like damage is not increasing and this is due to a damage range that has been set. Fundamentally, battle related stats fluctuate based on the level difference between enemies, and this is also why we are not planning to display evasion rates and other things.
For crafting, the stats in A Realm Reborn will have a greater influence than now, and for gathering, the requirements to obtain HQ items will be visible!

I think with this statement its very certain that this argument is probably now just old BS. It can and will be fixed in 2.0. Play 2.0 then come back and ball some more about crafted gear. Till thin I suggest we lock this thread.
Maybe just have a fusion between two gear's the regular one you meld it farm all the stuff to top tier then take it to a npc and they fuse the set somehow to your AF.
Considering how broken the melding system is, and how stupidly lucky you have to be to get anything good, it might as well be better than AF. It only makes sense stuff you spend millions upon millions on be better than free armor... Same as it was in XI.
I'd be very happy if they, one day, remove the materia system :/ But I'm sure that won't happen...
At least, they could raise a bit the success rate on the second materia (+10%~)
The best things in life are always free...~

I hate the materia system too. The entirety of it.
I really wish they would remove it... and no, this isn't sarcasm.
The reality is(like RL), everyone want/needs the latest and greatest.

... No!
On Topic: I for one like the look of the AF, and I can only hope that come 2.0 we will be able to 'upgrade' the gear through quests etc. much like the plan for Relic Weapons (this might have already been put to bed, but it's been a bit since I checked the forums).
Having said that, I feel as though there is a LOT of emphasis placed on "double/triple meld your gears of GTFO"... which really makes this game feel less MMO and more "See reality my way, OR DIE!!!" (Dylan Moran).
