It makes /tell people a real pain. A verry important part of a mmo is to effectivley communicate with people witch that makes it more of a chore then it should be.

For the love of all that's holy, please stop bumping this thread with this baseless argument that has been repeatedly countered. The problem you're alleging is a shortcoming of the chat system and has nothing to do with the presence of surnames; it's like you're handed a cinnabun and then complaining about how it would be better if it were shaped like french toast instead.

I agree. Not even WOW requires surnames, and one server holds more people than all of FFXIV's population combined.

Well.. OP is a self important douche but anyway, imo surnames are fine. If you remove them, most people are just going to mash the two into one stupid sounding name anyway. Or end up with all the xxxsephrothxxx xxsephirothyy BS that plagues every game.

So necro-opinion time: keep the surnames, make the full names unique for all the servers. It will soothe some pain when the time will be to embrace 2011 and merge all the servers in a single great and epic shard.

I'm just sick of seeing this thread and the same re-hashed arguments for taking something out of the game that's not causing any kind of problems to anyone. Well actually it is causing a problem, it's giving trolls something to complain about. Clearly they're running low on things to whine about since they're resurrecting old Belgian Rofl threads.
