you would need a mobile plan for the vita just to access the net. dont know how many ppl got that extra feature.
As to the range of the WIIU gamepad its confirmed to be at lease 8 meters or 24 feet, so you can go next room without a problem.

At the moment you cant do anything with FFXIV while not logged in anyway. Like checking market or maybe trading items...
So the value of the "everywhere online" feature is not as strong as the whole WIIU gamepad concept
