One problem with the proposed system: it doesn't allow ad-hoc cooperative play without formal party forming.
More simply: if I ran past you and see you're struggling with a mob, I can't actually help you kill it.

FFXI (oh dear lord excuse the reference) had "Call for Help!" and nobody gained sp (xp was the term), not the original claimer or the people assisting. The mobs name would turn from red (claim) to yellow (Call For Help a.k.a CFH) and it would also appear on the chat log of anybody nearby (yay for 14 having a mini map).
Also after CFH the mob would remain yellow until full health. PLEASE DON'T ALLOW CFH ON NM/HNM THIS TIME :P
