Plain and simple, melded gear makes things easier. Sure you don't NEED it for most things, but it sure as hell makes those things easier.
btw, vintage kite shield +39 def for sale, i upgraded to KS+1 +40 def the other day, will let this one go for 7mil, pst if your in sarg.
also fair to note, skirm sword has +5 mind as well as vks +1 , this is +10 mind for free IF you manage to get the melds you want on it, blew up 12 VKS+1 trying to score over 30 def , i got a vks+1 with 25def , but wasnt worth losing the 14 def on the one I had. For those who min max, KS+1 is far more easier to get, as you can gather and craft the shield easly. it comes with 2 more block rate and 3 more block then the VKS nq, not huge differance but a realativly cheap buy/make making it less expensive to attain double/triple meld.
@ melds after 2.0 : it is my understanding that all melds past double will lose some effectiveness. that is to say the first two materias will retain all stat effects where as the 3rd or more would have diminished stat effects. It is also rumored that , that particular change will only take effect if you stack the same type (ie def/vit/atk/ect) of materia past a double meld. Reguardless of teir. If this is true, If you decide to do a triple at this point, you can safely do so by simply adding a 3rd materia that is not the same as the first two. Example : Hands with block rate IV x2 and a str IV x1 , this meld would not have any stats deminished after 2.0 , that is to say IF what I have heard is correct
Reguardless of whats being rumored beyond the horizon, its important to remeber , no leve cap raises till 2years after 2.0. as it sits, there is very little room to improve gear wise with almost all endgame gear being equipable at lvl 48 or higher. Could SE bring new gear synths that blow cobalt , felt, and vanya gear outa the water? Yes, but then they would need gear with level cap raise to vastly improve on those stats, combine that with the materia option and players will be OP beyond any desierable amount. SE must, and I belive they will, remeber that the new players with the 2.0 release will want a reasonable goal to catch up to , in order to take part in endgame events. This and other , more speculative , reasons are why I do not belive we will see much improvment over gear we already have , IF ANY. Darksteal Plate Gear , would be the next , most obvious evolution of tank gear, imo. Soo , IF one was soo inclined to prepair for new gear, I would stock up on HQ darksteel, best way to do this, lvl your miner and go to town. Enless the raided gear can be melded , it is unlikely that anything raided will surpass anything crafted that has been materiaed with multiple teir 4s. Even by the current standards this is true, with the excemption of the WHM gear from imperial raids, Skirmish weapons , and yes , even the shield that is potentially the VKS+1(wich still has to be crafted) of the items listed , only the whm can not be materiaed. Anyways, told myself I would post on the forums, seems like my unorthodox way of tanking is more then most can accept. But I figured this statement is at the least, nutural.
Saving gil at this point seems futial. SE can control how much npc sell items for, and can even knock a decimal off everyones gil. But the can not controll what people will value the gear in the markets at. If somone has invested over 1 mil in making an item he/she will not sudenly settle for 100k for the same item. Even if everyone else is suddenly alot more broke then they previously were. Prices will not come down for quite some time, Where there is a demand for gear, people will go to RMTs to get said gear , even tho I do not condone this behaviour, I have no controll over it. Soo long as RMTs are in the game, Prices will stay inflated. My best advice is to liquidate your gil, invest in gear/materials/crystals and prepair to sell at current market rates, wich I would suspect will be the same after 2.0

What's your point? That I haven't done AV? That I haven't done Ifrit hard mode? So what. I have my reasons for not doing them yet, and it's not what you think. The fact is, you can't beat something you haven't tried, and I have only attempted to beat AV about 5 times. Out of those tries, I've only seen the boss twice. Neither time was I on PLD or WAR. I haven't even entered the instance for Ifrit hard mode. My reasoning has more to do with happenings in my LS than ability. When I start giving advice on how to beat instances that I haven't beaten myself, then maybe such things would be relevant, but please, show me where I've done so.
I don't give a rat's ass what anyone thinks about my pace at beating things in this game. I don't play the game for you. I'll challenge you to find anyone on Balmung who've I've played with that'll tell you I'm not a good tank.
Congratulations for learning how to use the search feature however, it's a great accomplishment. Your sorry attempt at trying to embarrass me has failed.

This is completely irrelevant to this thread.
I guess I just think it's kind of funny how you say that triple melds make things easier while you haven't done any things. All this content is going away soon. Why waste time and gil gambling with a materia melder when you could be enjoying it? It's really not that bad to do for funsies.
Also I guess it'd be hard to find someone to say you're a bad tank when you haven't tanked anything. Retire undefeated!

What are you talking about? I've tanked plenty. Just not in AV, or Ifrit Hard mode. I've tanked in the garuda fight, but my static broke up before we had enough practice to win. (but that had more to do with SE's ineptitude when it comes to customer service. A key member of or static got stuck in limbo for a week and got so pissed that he couldn't log in that he deleted his char never to come back.) I've tanked and won in every single other instance this game offers. I'll have you know, that when I lend a hand in a fight along with members of my LS, you're almost guaranteed a win. Me and my LS have a solid rep for accomplishing what needs to be done.I guess I just think it's kind of funny how you say that triple melds make things easier while you haven't done any things. In addition, AV is not going away, it'll be expanded in 2.0. But you probably glossed over that like the facts in this thread. Again, when I start giving advide on shit I haven't done, the trash talk away but lying about my accomplishments is not something i'm into.

Oh okay so you just haven't successfully tanked anything. Got it. Basically I'm just saying that I think getting adequate gear (singles, a couple doubles maybe, and drops) and then actually having fun with the game is probably a better path than spending all your time making gil and blowing up items for minimal stat increases. The stat increases from a triple (especially a 2-3-4 like you're so fond of) are minimal compared to a double. You and Ace come in here and say these melds will make a noticeable difference when you don't really have the experience to back that claim up because you haven't fought anything that actually taxes the tank.
(at least I'm fairly certain that's what ace is probably saying. I don't read his posts)
