Suggestion: Burn Gridania and the Black Shroud Down and Start Over

As much as I absolutely hate the layout of the Black Shroud (tunnels? REALLY?) I doubt it would be in any way cost-effective to do something about it.

Not to play too much of a devil's advocate, but you do realize how much time/money/effort is needed to actually remodel or recreate an entire zone? :x Even if they built it out of a set of prefabs/pre-created set pieces this is still far too much of a serious effort for anything less than a catastrophically bad zone I would assume.

Addendum: I actually rather like most of the zones in the game, though that wasn't really my point.

I am aware of that, but at the same time I do wish they'd try to do something to help make areas look interesting instead of so bland

This might sound crazy, but some of us would like to enjoy this game one day and justify the $80 we spent on it.

I actually enjoy the game immensely, and I wish I had more time in real life to play but work takes up a huge majority of my time. The only reason I'm able to post at work is because I get breaks to do so but we can't play games during those.

While no changes to Gridania and the Black Shroud will likely come of this, I will say that the thread can have it's productive side in that SE may learn from this that they should not make similar maps going forward. Having said that, I must admit it would be very interesting to have seen how this kind of map would have been received if it were for a more 'outer' part of the world, say, in a future expansion release area or something. But that can't happen now, of course.

Not possible. That would entail another 3-4 years of development work to rebuild the worlds themselves. Square Enix would be run into the ground by then.

You'll have to put up with the world's current state, but gameplay and content additions are on the way.

Not really. World of Warcraft builds an entirely new Zone about every other year. He's merely asking for one of FFXIV's zones to be replaced, and I concur. I'd like to see Gridania an "open" zone like the other two, just with lots of trees as it is currently, so I can walk AROUND deathbird as opposed to having to walk through it.
