Honestly I would have been happier if they'd left it to a basic server transfer, and didn't give us the data centers. Right now I don't know whether the new concept is better or worse, but I do know that it's throwing everyone for a loop. Think I'll just go back to looking at gameplay info, and cross the server-related bridge when I come to it.

ok i say no to global seprate servers better way to go the one who want global im shure glad u can speak chinese/japanese but a lot of ppl dont id rather be in a server where the majority do jap/chinese are now oly spelling out there shouts so must of us cant get much done

@OP: Why not base your "global" servers in the US? Why not base them in Europe?
See the inherent problem here? With this new system all servers are global. They're just telling you where they are located.

The argument I see coming up all the time is "I don't want regional labels because it will segregate the community because new players will choose their according server and not mine."
First - new players are NOT part of your community. If they choose another server, you won't miss them or anything, for the simple reason that you will never KNOW them.
Second, if your community really is as close-knit as you think it is it will stay together no matter what SE throws at them.
Fact is though, that the community only FEELS so close but eventually many people won't give a sh*t on staying together and just leave for a server which fits their location/timezone/etc. better meaning it was never so close-knit as you thought it was anyways.

This is really sad day for FFXIV. Now currently the EU players have a EU only server and once prime times over guess what, players that are on cant get much done.

This is absolutely not true. Ragnarok is NOT EU only, in fact it's probably the most diverse server of all with people from dozens of different countries.
Eu and NA prime time are both good times to get stuff done, the only time when it's hard is in EU morning/NA late night time, and even that only if you don't speak Japanese.. But guess what? Ragnarok has only ~700 players or something, it's WAY less than any other server. If it was a normal, full server, you would find people to play with at any time of the day.
Sometimes I get the feeling that most of you people never played any MMO except for FFXI and FFXIV.
I've played many games which were region-locked (and that's not even what SE is doing) and you could log in at 3 am or 8 in the morning and there were people to play with. It's because (not really surprisingly) you are NOT the only person on earth playing at oddball hours. For various reasons people will choose to play on any kind of server they like, just like we have people from all over the world on Ragnarok (some came because the timezone fits their playing time, others because they wanted to stay with their friends or because they expected it to be most 'international' which actually came true).
You can't see into the future, but based on experiences from other games and from playing on Ragnarok (even though it's low-populated) I can say that regional servers IMPROVE the gaming experience.
Especially if they also reduce lag...
