I'm sorry my mommy told me not to talk to strangers alone. Maybe we can meet in a public place?
(Serious question though, does facebook now have voice chat? - I dont really touch my page, and google is too far of a mouse click away for me to bother..)
They integrated Skype into it some time ago, so yeah theoretically you can call people with it.
They can't migrate data while the 1.0 servers are still reading/writing that data.
They're not rushing. They are doing it because, as was said before, they can't migrate the data if it's constantly being changed, and also because it will take a very long time to migrate everyone's data. Thus, unless everyone wants to start fresh, 2.0 can not launch until this data migration is completed. If they delay it, they'd be delaying the launch of the game even if it was ready because the game would have to wait for the data migration. Why are they rushing and slamming the door in November on 1.0?
Sure they can. Do they shutdown the servers to make backups? No. They can either dump an active database or use backup agents to complete the task. They can even use database replication as a transparent method to migrate the data without taking down the databases.
A offline backup just prior to a scheduled maintenance upgrade of their software is not the same as regular scheduled database backups. There are multiple ways to backup and replicate active databases so you can migrate to new testing environments. It all depends upon how much they invested in their DB production, testing and DR environments.
Technically the servers are going to be up in Alpha/Beta, I expect FFXIV 2.0 to relaunch somewhere around Feb. or March. Just depends on how many bugs we hit and if the servers can handle the stress test. Though they did make this game over in a relatively short a mount of time they have done an amazing job and I don't think it will nearly be as bad of as FFXI or FFXIV original launches. This team really seems to have its sh!t together. The post isn't about the shutdown dates, we all know that the last save is on November 1st and the server go down (if they go down) on Nobember 11th. What no one knows is when the servers come back up with 2.0. That's what this post pertains to, and this is new information, the interview was posted 16 hours 50 min ago...
This is more than just moving a backup. With the new engine and servers I imagine they can't just copy/paste the old data in with no issues. They're shutting the servers down so they have time to properly migrate the data over without any issues/corruption. We're talking about everyone's character data here, I'm more than willing to give them all the time they need to get it right.
