Melded Materia

To be fair, they didn't show you changing gear at all in VII (except weapons). I imagine it was more of a graphical limiation back then. In the movie, however, they are shown in all their glowing splendor.

The materias themselves glowed in-game, the like 2 times you get a look at them close-up outside of the menu. And until XI I'm pretty sure the only changing gear was the weapons.
