I was also thinking along the same lines. Either throw down a bit more money to make sure laptop lasts at least another 5 years or sit tight and cross my fingers.

I would sit tight. Mainly because if they code it right when it comes out that means your cpu will be killer. If they code it wrong than go out and buy a new CPU. If you go out and buy a new CPU now when the game comes out one of two things will happen.
1.) It turns out your old CPU was good enough and you wasted a bunch of money for nothing or
2.) It turns out you did need a new CPU and you made the right move in buying a new CPU (How ever FFXIV ARR doesnt officially come out for like 4 -5 months and i can grantee you the CPU you will buy right now will be much cheaper in those 4-5 months meaning you can buy the CPU you want for cheaper, or get a even better CPU for the same price.)

His CPU seems to be good enough to me (I have an Intel Core i7 2600k 2nd gen) Since the game's engine is optimized, he shouldn't have a problem running it at all (I'm thinking probably mid-max settings at the most)
