In fights where your enmity cannot come from damage and a few other small situations, the militia choker is the superior choice.

It is a good piece. I'm sorry if you can't afford or justify the cost, but that's okay.

Just because the gorget increases your attack by 30 (+6%) it doesn't mean it's increasing your damage by 6%. It will be more or usually, a lot less than that depending on the monster. However, the choker has 5 accuracy and always provides 3% enmity to everything, damage, abilities, and heals, not just damage.

    @Flamers:

Musta struck a nerve ;D , did I just make a statement , claiming that all your hard work and countles hours farming DLH armor was all for not? A wise man once said , "the truth will set you free, but first its gona piss you off" , actually not sure if who said that, but its quite fitting tonite . Blah blah blah, "you lose enmity" , you might match my def, just barely, but your vit number are probably way off, and mind is probably lower as well. Everyone seems to want to seperate the two stats, but if we are talking from a strickly unbiased, and fully tested aspect, then vit gose hand in hand with def. Only thing I can sugest is test it. Dont hate the mesanger.

Now to adress some comments I find less troll and more rational concern.

    1) Reason I sugest this high enmity DLH build for DD driven tanks. Because DPS benfits more from "enmity" then actions like "voke" "rampart" "flash" and even flat blade combo. Again, only thing Im gona sugest is test it. See wich helps you more, "enmity" or "mind". Now thats not to say I dont stack enmity where I can, when i score a malitia's chocker, I will be close to 100 enmity without once sacrificing vit or def. As far as the relic gear gose. I wont discredit relic anymore then I can, I dont have it thus I cant test it. There are traits on that gear you cant get anywhere else, soo that being said, I cant say conclusively anything about it.

    2) Those who assume I am losing vit or def stats have obviously ignored the fact that I regain those stats from materia stacking, hense why my vit and def number are both realy high. I wish I could get mind higher but forgive me If I havent reached gil cap yet, yeah I know "filthy casual" right? One thing at a time, and it takes time to build gear sets, especially if one dosent have limitless free time.

    3) , for those elitest out there who put themselve ten tiers above the rest because of their delusional idea that they are better because they have more time to spend on the game, well, for those guys, nothing serves better to explain how I feel , then simply saying, kiss my ass lol.. In what universe dose, more free time to play a video game = better at said video game? Sorry if being incapable of spaming content to death dosent put me in the upper levels of players , but with two kids, job and a wife, game kinda takes a back seat lol. Im not gona justify my lack of "acomplishments" in the game to a bunch of people who still cant figure out why on earth a normal human being dosent spend half his life behind a computer, to that end, get a life lol.

I posted My stats compaired to that of a DLH set because it was assumed I was missing somthing vital... other then enmity, these is nothing I am missing out on, and its my opinion that enmity + on pld is not a "vital" stat. I know, god forbid somone dosent fall in line with your elitest ideals, "off with his head!" bunch of morons, after all the parseing and testing I have done you honestly think simple trolling and flaming is gona change my veiws? I have been tanking this game since yoshi took over. Have tested, and continue to test stats, and my personal results conclude that def is in fact not broken in anyway. Vit dose help with damge mitigation and they both effect eachother. Mind is a strong and in my opinion the strongest enmity stat for PLD, block is as important as block rate and both in high numbers can reduce damage an aditional 50% . Where enmity and dps helps, its not a main stay thus not a priority in my book. These are all MY conclusions and have worked for me for a long time. Enjoy your DLH gear, I am certainly going to enjoy taking less damage then the flamers who stack dlh and holding hate just fine , enjoy the rest of your day. Flame on.

    Are you dyslexic? Serious question.

Also, to clarify some things and hopefully avoid more essays from you:

I don't think many people are saying the vitality or defense are broken or worthless. They clearly do mitigate damage. The problem with your view is that you absolutely do not need anywhere near 370 vitality for anything in the game, and you do sacrifice a lot of strength, HP, enmity, and accuracy to get there. One white mage is more than enough to keep me up on both Ifrit Extreme and Nael Deus Darnus. Taking 10 or even 20 percent less damage won't allow me to drop that white mage. It won't even allow the white mage to really focus on nuking more.

Dropping some vitality and defense for strength/enmity/accuracy will allow your damage dealers to push harder and start fights earlier. It will let your white mage go nuts on healing the rest of the party without having to worry. Accuracy will make your hate consistent, so you don't have to say "Sorry guys, missed the phalanx lol."

Finally, congratulations on reproducing. I know a married couple who used to play this game (before Diablo 3 killed their linkshell), and they managed to beat both dungeon speed runs and Garuda while also taking care of their kids and working. Also, they could write clearly.

I didn't mean to imply that your lack of Heavy Darklight armor makes you a bad source of advice. I meant to imply that your complete lack of experience makes you a bad source of advice.

Every thread he posts in is just an endless well of merriment and facepalm. I swear I've already said all the the things that have been posted by others, just differently but with the same message. Seems like a lost cause at this point.

Why would you set yourself up for failer?

Soo you say if I complete these pre reqs in your mind to make any adivice I have , lagit, then you will be forced to accept them as such? There is nothing wrong with having standards, but if your going to rage soo hard against somones ideals, you should probably set the standard in wich you can accept said ideals, a bit higher.
    Realy? Speed runs and Darnus?

Ok , if YOU say it must be so, then it MUST be so , right? I will get the achivements im my own good time, and I will do it with my current gear set. Great examples for the new tanks in the game btw " you gota have this gear or your a shit tank" get over yourselves.

And I will go even further by saying this, to all new tanks to the game,

Enmity should not be on the top of your priority list, imo. There is one sure thing that defines a tank from anyone else in the party, and its not pulling hate. Tanks were dubed , "tanks", for a reason, they are designed and intended to mitigate damage in such ways no one else in the party can. Holding hate is equally important of an aspect , but between holding hate and mitigating damage, only one of those two aspects can your party support you in. Healers ensure your HP dosent bottom out and can buff you to complement your damage mitigation but ultimatly its the damage you mitigate that defines you as a TANK. If enmity was the only real concern here then MNK tanks would be huge right now.

Stay alive and Keep hate, both rely on eachother to be valid. The party can only help you with one of those.

The only issue I have with body piece is the loss of 32 mind, but that can still be made up with mind rings.
45 enmity is nice, but like you say you lose mind, mind is more valuable (imo) as a pld,

11 def is more valuable then 13 vit.

    34 hp is a joke

+5 regen can be made up with higher vit numbers, wich I understand is contradictory to what I just stated but thats because I dont use mind/acc/str rings, I use HQ vit rings, wich more then makes up for the lack of vit on the gear and further increases strength of self buffs and damage mitigation. Not sure how conclusive this is, as I have just hear of it, but some are saying it effects block power, wich is huge in my book. Overall , Crafted materiaed gear is more valuable, at least in this case.

How do you know which set is optimal for each situation? Understand the stats and the mechanics.

    I would try this thread:
    http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/107...-how-they-work.

This stuff will all change in 2.0 so I wouldn't get too worked up min/maxing in the current game. If you really do care though, there is a lot to read on the link I gave. I'd warn you as to which posters you probably don't want to be taking advice from on the PLD forums, but I think it would be an insult on your intelligence to think you can't figure this one out on your own.

Also for clarification, it has been incorrectly said many times on this forum that DEF gets less effective as dLVL increases. This is FALSE. You will actually gain more damage reduction per point of DEF the higher the dLVL is. The reason DEF is considered useless on high end mobs like Ifrit is because DEF gets less efficient the further you are from the damage floor, regardless of the dLVL. So if you're fighting an R50 that just happens to dish out high physical damage, DEF is still going to be marginally useful. On the other hand, if you have an R58 that does weak physical damage, DEF will still be useful.

Don't think of DEF utility in terms of dLVL, but in a more simplistic "how much damage am I taking" way. If you're taking very little and know you're not at the floor, stack more DEF. If you're taking a whole lot, best to try something else.
For most things where a PLD is required, the mob(s) do a lot of damage so DEF is not that hot. For standard 8 man 'endgame content' you won't find too many uses for DEF stacking unfortunately.

Also, the enmity modifiers for flat blade and spirits within are constantly given as 4.5x for flat and 1.5x for spirits on this forum. The actual modifiers are 5.5x and 2.5x. The mix up comes from the way the JP blogger who tested these wrote his explanation and the subsequent mistranslation. He actually says "an additional 4.5x" (meaning in addition to the base amount). There is no formula or data for how MND affects the flat blade enmity bonus. MND does increase damage though, which is then multiplied by the 5.5x / 2.5x modifier.

Intresting that you have found a cap on vit. granted I havent reached numbers as high as my def , but I have yet to find a hard cap on vit, wether or not a soft cap exists , Im not sure, would have to parse more fights, but , again, I have yet to find at least a hard cap on vit. The more I add, even with 370+ , the less damage Im taking. Curious if you know the cap, would like to know myself

No, this is not what I said. You have not cleared the dungeons at all. The hardest thing you've beaten is Mog and I'd bet that you did it on BLM or something. The reason I harp on your lack of experience is because you are CLEARLY playing a different game. This game is about speed and efficiency. Speed runs, boss timers (which can actually be an issue on Darnus), and relic leves all require your damage dealers to push hard. As a tank it's your job to keep the monster facing one direction so that they can do that. While survival is also a priority, you haven't even fought anything that threatens a normally-geared paladin.

I'm not telling you to get a certain gear set and stick to it. I'm not telling you that people without darklight gear are trash. I'm telling you to gear to the situation. Right now there is no situation in this game that calls for 370 vitality.

If you actually set out to complete goals beyond mog then you will see why gearing like you do is inefficient.
