"Since the new engine will renew the looks of some elements, every player will be able to redesign his character from scratch when 2.0 will hit, including the ability to change race and gender if desired."

Pretty much every FFXIV site had this statement released when the 2.0 first screenshot was released. While that isn't officially straight from SE i suppose, I'm going to figure that the people writing these articles were told as such.

The last I've heard Yoshi himself mention it was in Nov from a Q&A:

"Q: With the launch of 2.0, will we be able to change our character's gender? What about names?
A: We've had a ton of requests for race changes, so I'm thinking that it's a good idea. But are you all really okay with gender? For example, if your friend changes his gender, that may be quite shocking. System-wise it's no problem at all, so it's really up to you. It's not like you have to change gender if you don't want to, so please let me know your feedback.

With name changes, from a UI standpoint there would be problems with names being too long. So if we were to make it possible to change names in 2.0, we would most likely have to adjust the maximum length. I'd like to make this decision based on how many requests we get as well as how difficult it would be to implement.

So, if any of you have feedback, please submit it on the forums and let us know."

I'd just be surprised that we wouldn't be able to change genders, considering the 2 new additions to our character palette are indeed, gender changes (the female Roaegadyn and male Miquote)

Hubby is leaning towards Male Miqote provided they have hair options he likes ^^

I totally started a new character with a different name than my original tarufell as soon as I found out male miqo'te were confirmed for 2.0 with race changes being available. >_> Didn't want to run around with a Lalafell name on a catboy!

There'll also be female highlanders. So, basically, we'll be able to choose any gender of any race and clan.
