I agree with Alhanelem, but to integrate all the Market Wards pre 2.0 is way too much work. That is why I am proposing a simple way to keep track of which row/area the retainer was sent to (at least I hope it is simple).

I really don't think it's necessary. I suppose they could change "the designated ward" to the "the <name> ward" but honestly, this isn't something I have trouble keeping track of. In fact, I usually just spam the same ward until I get in anyway.
I think it would be a great help if you just could get an overview about what is FREE instead of trying everything and waiting if your retainer returns. There ARE free spots, but it's really hard to find them.
So IMO the solution would be to show what is available instead of showing all possible spots.
That would make it infinitely harder to find a spot. The reason spots are available is because most ppl are too lazy to go and check every single row.I think it would be a great help if you just could get an overview about what is FREE instead of trying everything and waiting if your retainer returns. but even still sometimes it takes hours of clicking to find a spot. at least if we can see how many remaining spaces there are in a ward, we at least know where to click. instead of waiting for someone to accidentally call their retainer from a bell, and praying you just happen to be clicking in that same one.

yes but then so does everyone else and then there would never be an open spot
Pooling all items into one does not help without a scroll bar to veiw all item at once by scrolling. Currently their is a way to find where your current retainer is by hitting menu > retainer .... should tell you where your retainer is and which ward. I have no issue because I have both my retainers in a uldah ward and never take them out for anything. I ensure there is an item noone buys on my retainers. I agree with the pooling but if they do pool allow for scrolling and purchasing the items. Alot of current highly sought after HQ items have to be found via searching every ward and if I had to search every city this causes undue travel. I have tried going to other cities for lower price items but they seem to be overpriced because they are set at a price and undercutted in uldah within mins.

the issue is the OP and I'm sure others forget which ward they last "tried" to place a retainer in and end up trying the same ward multiple times. The OPs suggest will fix a minor nuisance at very little effort.Pooling all items into one does not help without a scroll bar to veiw all item at once by scrolling. I have the same problem. The way I fix it is by shouting in ul dah, usually get a /t for it. if not than i npc it. Not the best way to go about it cause you lose alot of money that way. But money in FFXIV is easy enough to come by and you save yourself lots of headaches. Which for me is worth more than money in ffxiv
