Whilst that's true, TOR tanked even with a solid UI and network. Initially it won't matter, but it will if they're slow to release content.

If they trickle content in they also run the risk of having people complete the content in a very short period and then have no incentive to play until the next bit of content is added.

At the very least, they should heavily advertise these features as COMING SOON or something.

Yoshida: The current player won’t be able to choose a new starting city. The reason being that current players are playing the story now and the continuation of that story with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn – So we can’t make any changes there.
Sadly not, looks like only GC with some sort of penalty and your character can be changed.

I'm concerned because it looks like a matter of one or two months after launch to get this stuff out...
They are important features that should be there for all new players in terms of retention.
...i hope there isn't still pressure to release on a day like last time...

The OP's post and following 'white knight' replies remind me of 1.0 launch all over again. /facepalm

Instead of settling for mediocrity, let's challenge SE to release something that's full blown instead of bare bones.

I have no doubt 2.0 will be miles better than 1.0 launch (not hard) yet let's not just jump on the 'whatever SE gives us, we will love' bandwagon mindlessly. THIS is what caused 1.0 to fail more than anything else. You had a group of white knighters with their heads in the sand - people that were going to play FFXIV no matter what - and then the rest of the consumer base going what the crap is this?

Its not people on this forum that need to be convinced to play - its everyone ELSE! And SE is going to have to launch with something fantastic to recover from all the ill-will it garnered in 2010.

I seen no white knight responses, however player communities deem white knights as those who can look realistically at things as well as those who may actually like something -- likewise game communities deem trolls as those who disagree with you.

Which means end-game at launch doesn't affect anyone but those who are currently playing 1.0 and done all content -- if you take 1.0's current content and slap it onto revamped 2.0 (which they are) there's more than enough launch content to keep people happy, the only thing they won't have at immediate launch is so few things compared to what they will have.

The thing is, it's not like things like PVP and crystal tower are the ONLY content they're working on for 2.0.

There's (for SE's sake) hopefully different EG content available. Roaming Odin, for one. It's not like we'll be left in the dust.

The problem with games like TOR is that it's too easy to get EG content done. It took less than a week to get all hardmode dungeons done.

Not the case, even for XIV 1.0. I still have yet to kill Garuda Hardmode or Van Darnus. A lot of the community still has to from what I've seen in game. I still don't have darklight. People still need primals killed, etc.

Add the 1.0 content we have now to whatever is new content in 2.0 and MOST of the community will have something they need done to improve their character.

Final Fantasy MMO has never been about ease of content - which is a good thing. Thankfully, XIV has let up on some difficulty in the form of GC gear and whatnot.

Hopefully the new content helps balance out old players and new ones, those that crave a challenging, badass fight and those that just want to explore and get started in FFXIV.

As it stands now, I find 2.0's progress and presentation to be reminiscent of the way 1.0 was introduced.

Honestly they've been saying/hinting at this since the 2.0 reveal. The wording in some of the interviews and I think some of the pdfs kind of alludes to certain things not being in immediately at launch. This is just more or less a direct confirmation.
