I'm sure fine play is gonna be stuff like pulling off a 3 step combo, stunning a mobs ability, casting spell combos or incapacitation of limbs ect. ect.
I don't think it will involve precision timing of button presses.

I agree that this might be more realistic given potential latency issues.
But with that in mind, imagine if "fine play" meant that you could increase your XP bonus(or even restore HP/MP/spiritbond/item drop rate/whatever) after battle by fulfilling challenges much like in a Tales game.
"Land a successful 3-hit combo" - +3% xp at end of battle. Something like that. They could even tie it into achievements.

Sounds like a good system to push players away from burning through mobs mindlessly and actually use some strategy, saving skills being more reactive than active. Reminds me of Star Ocean 4 how you used various tactics for a bonus at the end of a fight.



Reminds me of Overkill in FFX.
