Through the past 2 years, I have supported Square. I've encouraged the great strides in making this game great and I've done my best to try and steer them from directions that would just end up hurting them.

And the one time, the ONE time I'm genuinely distraught over this game...I'm a crybaby princess.

There's been a lot of speculation regarding the caption of one of the art assets released today, so I wanted to chime in and help try to clear things up.

The caption in question describes the art as 破壊されたイシュガルドの要塞. This has led to translations such as 'destroyed Ishgard fortress'. The problem here is that due to the complexity of Japanese grammar, that is not the only possible interpretation.

The following, while completely different, are both acceptable translations:

[破壊されたイシュガルド](の要塞)
(Fortress of) [destroyed Ishgard]

(破壊された)[イシュガルドの要塞]
(Destroyed) [Fortress of Ishgard]

But wait, there's more!

The の here can either represent the possessive, as in:

イシュガルド[の]
[of] Ishgard

Or it can be used to change a noun into an adjective

イシュガルド[の]
Ishgard[ian]

Considering all these things, as well as the context, probably the best representation of the original Japanese is:

"A destroyed Ishgardian fortress."

Anyone who nitpicks over shit just because they have supported S.E for XYZ years or because a minor texture is bad can go play something else. At least we won't have to hear them.
