Yes, I will buy one if and when it is implimented... in a heartbeat. In less than a heartbeat even.
Heck, if so required; I will pillage, loot, and massacre at will to obtain the necessary gil. Yep, and Legatus Van Baelsar would wet his breeches when he sees me rollup in this...

Personally I'd see making airships as a group based activity, however if certain (rich) people could buy airships that were made by players then it would open up some good market oppurtunities.![]()

lol... I know right? Thanks Doho, and I shall help you explain to Chardizard with a few pics...
(BTW, that figure there is not me, but my mannequin in Serpent General gear)
Like was rightly said in this thread, players WILL spend that gil... be it extravagantly, prudently, or generously. I spent a good chunk of funds on my mog house in FFXI because I could definitely afford to... when you're in an efficient HMNLS, it gets to a point where you start making an obscene amount of gil.
Plus my Moogle threatened to Mijin Gakure if I didn't make his life "posh"...besides, it was great to have your friends visit your spiffy Mog house and have them jump with muddy shoes all over your bed. Yep.

What might be cool is if you could lease airships for a certain amount of gil (lets just say 1 mil/day) and could make money based off of how many people rode your airship that day (lets say 10% of total gil made that day).

Idk about buying, but I'm hoping for building! (I'm sure it will be expensive still)
Yoshida: It’s a little too early to reveal the full range of details, but we are planning several stages for the implementation of player housing. This content will be closely linked with the “free company” system, which you can think of as being similar to the guild systems often found in most MMORPGs. First, a house can be owned as collective property for all of the members of a free company. Later, we plan on allowing these houses to be owned by individuals. Players will be able to customize the exterior, interior and garden area of their house. Gardens will be expanded via new content such as gysahl greens gardens and chocobo stables. At the same time, we’re also looking into the ability to create airships and boats (by crafting) within housing. As such, the housing system in FFXIV will be updated with each patch and will develop to serve as important “lifestyle-related end-game content.”

Yeah I was thinking about this a while ago when I was bored at work
Maybe certain air ships can go certain places.
Crystals / Shards for fuel or have alchemists craft fuel
Crafters could make parts
Player controlled could go where you want
Could bring friends
Cheaps ones and billion gil air ships for the elite
Airship dock to see everyone elses boat
Hire-able NPC crew
oh man I could go on for days
