I expect there to be 100's of "I'm missing X item" threads. Consisting of mostly people who forgot they put X item on their retainer. As others have stated, it's pretty obvious as to why 1.X is going down during the 2.0 beta. They'll be transferring our data over during that time so they can't have us playing and changing that same data while moving it. Hopefully they'll use the 2.0 beta time to make sure that all of the data is properly and carefully moved over to 2.0.
That's not what I meant. I'm saying they will log on, expecting something to be on their character and post a thread that it's missing, but in reality they put it on there retainer the day before the servers went down and forgot about it.
My guess, when open beta comes around we'll be able to play our characters. At least thats what i'm hoping for. Seems logical to do that since its open beta.
But isn't open beta for jp and international servers estimated beginning of 2013
I will gladly play 2.0 beta !*hush* i need to see new UI. Current one gives me a creepiness when I open it.
This is the URL to the interview.Q: When will Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 launch?
A: I expect the first Closed Beta for the Japan and International servers to be held end September or early October, entering Closed Beta 2 this winter and Open Beta in January next year. We will be talking to Shanda Games about the China server, with features such as PvP, blocking 3rd party programs and localization, hence the Chian server will launch later.

The last interview they were talking closed beta at the end of this month then open beta sometime around the end of the year so I'm seriously doubting the current version is going to be down for both the open and closed beta. I suspect they are just going to use snapshots of the current version in the closed beta to run migration tests, then run an open beta for a bit to test capacity, THEN shut down the current version for a month and do the data migration while finish up and test any changes made from open and closed betas.
Many people are going to play GW2 and never come back.
GW2 contrary to popular belief is not the Promised Land. I think it's going to be the opposite actually, people will come from there to here.
