Actually, if you guys remember Tamagotchi, it can be like that. To raise chocobo from an app on our phones.
"The Tamagotchi (たまごっち, Tamagotchi?) is a handheld digital pet, created in Japan by Akihiro Yokoi of WiZ and Aki Maita of Bandai. It was first sold by Bandai in 1996 in Japan. As of 2010, over 76 million Tamagotchis have been sold world-wide.[1] Most Tamagotchis are housed in a small egg-shaped computer with an interface usually consisting of three buttons, although the number of buttons may vary for different variations."

Usually ideas like this are Auction house or something equally pedestrian. Even if Chocobo raising is on their list. I like the OP's specific ideas. (Especially the one about taking Chocobos for walks and finding things etc.) Might be a way to "encourage" talking some walks instead of staying in the chair for long periods. Especially if theres "bonus" to using it once in a while. 2x Gyashi Greens!
I like the Chocobo raising idea, the scanning of stuff kind of puts me off.
A one stop all sort of app would be nice, Chocobo raising, Auctions, mobile authenticator, Player Armory/profile(to show up your character), mail system to send mail to friends in game, and a private company communication(talk in real time with your company), raid calendar connected to the private company calendar. Have all this so you can keep track of everything from outside of FFXIV, the only thing you can't do is play the game.
My idea would be a mobile yet connected card game. I believe we are getting some kind of card game in 2.0 or after launch. Your smart phone would works as a mobile game board for the card game. You can play other people for fun or for keeps. All from your phone, the cards will also be shared with your characters cards, so you win cards while battling people from your phone you get the winnings in game you lose on the phone you lose in the game. That is if you play for keeps or not.
Might be a fun thing to do trade cards with facebook friends or battle them.
This would build the community pillar even stronger and giving to option to post your winning on facebook or other social networks would put FFXIV in every day talk. Giving people who have some sort of idea about the game some incentive to look into what it is all about.
Anything to help spread the word about the game and increasing players.
And there could be so much more practical applications to this, other than raising chocobos... Great idea! I want to see this on iOS, as it seems to be the favorite platform of SE.![]()

Although I would love an app for all sorts of things, I do not, under any circumstances, want it connected to Facebook. The rules governing apps on Facebook and the data it collects is not something that I want tying into an account that I have a security token to help me protect. Sorry.
Other than that, I like the idea of the chocobo raising thing. Since that would clearly connect it to our personal game data already, it would be nice to have the ability to send mail, as someone mentioned. I care less about the AH abilities. That sounds like it could get unwieldy.
I'd like to either have SE's app contain, or have FFXIV Pro update, to include new timers for everything. Show me when leve reset is, hamlets are up (well, whatever the new thing is since I assume Hamlet defense will be changed), anima recharge, ship timers, etc.
I'd also like to retain the ability to look up characters on Lodestone that FFXIV Pro currently provides, with recent progress and all.
Additionally, I'd like to see it contain the current list of any item turn-ins that may be up with Grand Companies or whatever. If there's a place I can turn in items for something, I want to see what is currently being asked for. Ideally, it would have real-time updates of what has already been turned in if there are visible limits in the game, but I will settle for what they are actually asking for now.
Not crazy about the idea of collectible cards you can scan for items. That just goes down a whole other road that I don't think I want to tread. If they were to do that, I'd much prefer it was vanity items only (like the Yukatas). Otherwise it becomes spending a ton of cash randomly hoping to get the cool armor you really need, or whatever. If they want to go that route, just open a cash shop, but I'd rather not see that happen. I pay a subscription fee to play the game. If I suddenly have to start dropping hundreds of dollars on items to keep me able to participate in content, I will turn around and walk away again.
I have the same feeling about finding items while taking your chocobo for a walk. It's cute, but I walk an awful lot in a day. I could see it getting to be a big deal if it gave out really useful stuff, which is what people are usually looking for when they mention stuff like that. People usually want to find cobalt ore and materia or something, not a Roost Biscuit.
In order for something like that not to become "a necessity", you would have to only find "useless" things like fireworks; or only be able to find moko seeds or something that you could trade a crazy number of to a moogle for some food. Something like that. I don't want to see an out of game app become a "necessary" part of playing the game where you are seriously hampered by not having it. Knowing how hardcore some people can get, if you could get really useful items at all easily from it, it would become that way in a hurry.
Love the chocobo idea. I also hope they add a mobile authenticator because I absolutely hate walking around with this key dongle in order to log into the forums and such when away from home. It would be nice to already have it on my phone.
I forgot about that! An app dongle for FFXIV would be great in case we misplaced our original dongle, or the battery ran out on it.
The cards would be something with a scanning code on it. The cards could contain items such as crystals, farming/crafting items (such as Moko Grass, fruit, food, etc.). If Beastmaster were available in-game, there could be cards for unlocking Familiars for the job. Kind of like Pokemon, in a sense...Although I would love an app for all sorts of things, I do not, under any circumstances, want it connected to Facebook. Moko grass or crystals, I'd be fine with, although it could begin that slippery slope of "cash shop like". Vanity armor like the yukatas, I'd be fine with. Familiars or skills for Beastmaster, not ok with. That turns it into a "necessity".The cards would be something with a scanning code on it. I did think of one thing I'd like to see that I'd forgotten about. If raising chocobos via app is possible, then I'd also like to see the ability to check my garden via app.
ETA: Before anyone from R&D who might be lurking gets any ideas, I would only be ok with scannable cards for any type of item in the context of them being included promotionally with a magazine or something similar. I would, under no circumstances, enjoy there suddenly being booster packs of cards on the shelves of stores that I can purchase and scan for in-game items of any kind.
