Competition, bragging rights, proof, rewards or completion work. I mean yeah most of those are e-peen related but some people like those challenges and just do them for the sake of doing them, kind of like Knife-only Resident Evil runs or low level RPG runs. Others, like me, tend to do it for completion. It's a thing that can be done, why not do it? It's just nice that they've given us some in-game rewards along the way.

Not necessarily.
The initial batch of FFXI achievements for the 360 were all end game-ish (max level in a job, finishing a storyline, etc...). But they added more in later that provided a much broader spectrum of accomplishments. For instance, iirc, getting the Khazam Airpass earned you an achievement.
I think trophy support is mandatory for the PS3 now.
In fact, the lack of trophies in MHP3 is one of the big holdups in it's NA release IIRC.
Square don't have a choice. It has to support trophies. The real question is how playing on PC will affect this. If I complete a trophy requirement on PC will I gain it when I log in on PS3? It was never my intention to play on PC but the PS3 game never came. I would be seriously annoyed if all my progress on PC stopped me from gaining trophies on PS3.
Easiest solution is just to have the trophies mirror in-game achievements.
Nobody is missing out on anything that way.
It'll probably be handled the same way that it was handled for the 360 - go talk to an NPC in-game while playing on your console, and the NPC will flag the trophies for you.Square don't have a choice. The alternate possibility is to simply give the game the means to flag trophies that you've already completed. Achievements on the PC were handled in this fashion since the achievements weren't added to the game until after players had already completed a number of them.
I don't care about them myself, but I say...sure, why not?
