The website is more about how the game is at the moment. If you were expecting to see anything new, well, check out Ul'dah. That's at least something new we can learn from this. As far as new players go, they may see the same things as the game is currently, I believe they should have at least threw in Male Miqo'te besides the picture to the left.
I see nothing wrong with the website. Big whoop if not everything is brand new. Not literally everything in 2.0 will BE new. The races will still be the races (and by the way their lore did change), places will still have their backstory. If the excluded everything you already know about then it wouldn't be a very informative website. Its not a site for players who just wanna know about 2.0...its a website to introduce NON-players to the game.
Looks to me the Weekly updates are starting now it would seem judging by that statementWelcome to the official website for FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. From now until the game's release we will be featuring regular updates and news about the game, and are looking forward to showing you everything that's in store!.
let me put it a totally different way.
Imagine the toyota camby (made up name) breaks... A LOT
They are all over the media for breaking down, but they are toyota's main car
So toyota redesigns it, releases a new video which shows a computer animated car driving down the road, and sends that out to the media along with a new site
People who may be interested see the CG video and go check out the website
They get to the website and see pics of the old toyata camby
nothing tells them about the new safety features
nothing ensures them the new one doesn't suck
Theres links to pics of the old camby and information about the old camby
What do you think most people will do?
Probably assume the car sucks as much as the first one and that they are just rebranding it, never check the site again, and look at other cars.
Thats exactly what is happening right now in FFXIV. Aside from a bunch of people on the forums talking about their friends saying that, you can check the new youtube videos and read the comments
The new site should show GAMEPLAY, and EMPHASIZE how the game has changed for the better. Simple as that. If it doesn't, the site will just have the opposite of the desired effect, and turn people away.

I don't see much of a problem with the new website, but i will say i was disappointed they showed current in game screens of limsa and grid while uldah has new content art on it's page.
1 place at a time :P, they Got Ul'dah now only need Grid/Limsa now =), and its only 2 weeks away to we get bucket loads of info/screens/gameplay etc.
^ It doesn't help that IGN put the up youtube video and titled it "FFXIV rebranded", of course it's gathering negative comments. It makes it sound as if SE is rebranding to fool everyone again, They should have titled it "FFXIV revamped, a completely new game". Youtube is one of the primary ways of word-of-mouth, so yeah, not good.
And also in the video, all the guy said was the update are "New graphic engine, tweak battle system, and expand chocobo system", like come on, why not mention the User Interface, the revamped maps? Like this is the first major update from IGN about FF14 since September 2010, and this is the first thing people will hear.

Any New information is good information at this point, they said they are going all out in 15 days so let them go all out in 15 days.^ It doesn't help that IGN put the up youtube video and titled it "FFXIV rebranded", of course it's gathering negative comments. because unlike all the biased people on this forum who would believe that the world was coming to an end if it was in one of yoshida's letters, ign realizes the exact problem i am posting about. That this website does not make the game look new or different.^ It doesn't help that IGN put the up youtube video and titled it "FFXIV rebranded", of course it's gathering negative comments. And that's why i posted it. When you have huge gaming media companies interpreting a new game as "re branded" you know you are failing hardcore at marketing already.
