One black mage can kill all of the meteors until the astral flow phase or whatever it is, just go to the top of the stairs or near the top and wait for them to approach you, then do your Thundara combo, if you're constantly moving it will be very hard to hit them

They are letting you nuke way under in this fight. Don't aim up, aim down instead and your problem solved.
I took out all the meteors until 5% solo from top platform.

While I agree the issue is annoying in general, it's not a problem in this particular fight. As other people said, go up the stairs and you should have no problems taking them down.

It does annoy the hell off me when playing any ranged class on maps with high slopes a la Coerthas though. It's clearly there to prevent "cliffing", but there are better ways to solve that, for example increasing mob regen if mob cannot reach anyone in the party or just a check if a mob can reach you at all.

It was my understanding if you go up the stairs you get hit for 9999. I certainly saw it happen once during our last attempt.

I'm kinda suprised that this functionality doesn't bother more people. They can keep us from safely nuking things out of harm's way without making it so you have to get up in a monster's face if they're on a hill before you can cast on them.

It seems a lot of people don't remember the terrain abuse that happened in XI.
Remember when it was just a boss and tank on the ground and then all the mages stood up above a ramp, immune to tp attacks even though they were technically in range?

That's why we have the too far above/below rule.

You only get hit for 9999 if you have lead hate when you go up the stairs. If your tank is good, a BLM going up the stairs should be completely fine.

I know why we have it, that doesn't mean it should exist. what you do is either fix it so you simply can't kill (e.g. they regenerate their health) enemies if they can't path to you (it's really easy to check this in any modern game, don't try to tell me they can't do it) or you just miss them 100% if they are unable to path to you.

Implement simple pathing checks, and the too high/low rule doesn't need to exist.

This was only an issue where you could nuke enemies below you from an upper level where enemies had no way to reach you. Stuff like nuking at the top of the ramp is legitimate use of terrain- The monster can still reach you if you pull hate. I don't know one case in the game where being on higher ground actually made you 100% safe. The illegitimate use of terrain was only things like the Wall of Justice @ Absolute Virtue back in the day, and a few other random places in the game where you could get into places you shouldn't be able to and nuke enemies but they couldn't reach you.

Having a tank hold a monster at the bottom of a ramp is not an abuse. Terrain should have benefits and pitfalls. That's completely different from situations where you have 0% chance to ever be hit even if you have hate.
