I think awhile back the devs said they were considering letting us toggle gear in the head slot. I know that cowls take up a head gear slot but one of their examples was taking the hood off of a cowl. In the case of the heavy darksteel gear it could be anywhere from removing the head part completely or just allowing us to lift the visor.
