As I understand it, companies like IGE are only a broker. They're just a middle man between us and the actual chinese gold farms.

IGE never farmed anything however. They just purchase gold from farmers and sell it back. Lot of company selling gold are established outside China to have a better chance reaching the end user. They use that as an advertising argument "transactions are safe, we are based in [country that's not China]".

On top of reasons that would justify China to have separated severs, everyone seems to have forgot about the billing model. The game could be F2P in China, or sub based (way cheaper than ours, to match Chinese's PPP), hourly based, Freemium, etc. Shanda can just use whatever billing model they sit fit to maximize profit. More profit for them means more profit for SE as well in royalties.
