Seriously guys, screw that icon. It is not a good time for fixing such a details. Let SE work on some serious improvements. When FFXIV will become PLAYABLE, stable, and will get some content, we gonna start bitching on details.
If we keep discuss things like stupid aggro icons, then next few updates will bring us more "improvements" like larger monsters, larger battle effects, rank up fanfares, and all the garbage.
Why not make it like final fantasy XI with no icons and add stuff like sneak, Invis and Deodorize? It seems Square is turning this into a game to make anyone hit end game and collect anything they want. I just want to see some challenges. Also some learning of the nature of the aggressiveness of the Fiends running around. That's what made some players so nice to have around in Vanadiel. Knowledge of the world should be mandatory to be a good player in a game like this.
I'd quite like them to add an "inbetween" icon too. Maybe a yellow one or something for mobs with special aggro conditions. These can be things like when someone casts a spell, when theres 2 or more of the mob together etc etc.
The fun of course would be finding out what makes it aggro...
I like the new icons, it puts the game inline with the GUI of other MMOs, and what players from them would expect. I think people need to put FFXI out of their minds when judging MMO standards, as this nostalgia is really the only reason people have an issue with this being there in the first place. FFXI had a good GUI for its time considering it had to be displayed on SD televisions, but it is inadequate by modern standards for a variety of reasons. I can recall reviews complaining of how many things in it were unintuitive for a PC game even when FFXI came out, before the modern standard was established. FFXIV should learn from more recent games for its GUI, and these icons are a decent first step in that direction.
I guess make it optional if people are going to keep complaining about it, but I foresee many issues with people in my party thinking they're not playing "easy mode" and picking a fight with an enemy that's too strong or walking by an aggroing mob in the future. God knows it happened to me a lot moving around with parties in FFXI, and it's happened a few times in XIV before they put the aggro icons in.
whoever thought the red starburst went with the style of the GUI needs a lesson in design. lol
Seriously, that thing sticks out like a sore thumb in the overall design of the GUI. Maybe thats the point, but I'd rather have a red circle or the name of the character be red. Or when you click on the character it highlights in red like the glowing that occurs when a target is recently targeted.
Just something other than that ugly starburst. :P Please?!
