That this thread garnered so many views and dev attention is infuriating to me. The various rationalizations about why implementing the "missing genders" is so important still don't change that this addition won't make the game more entertaining, but will consume and require extra resources and effort from the devs.
No matter how minor the edits to character skeletons and whatnot they have to make, it's still a major addition to implement something like this.
I'm not saying it is wrong, as i wouldn't mind seeing them myself, but there is always time to make this addition later and allow current players the chance to have their items, experience and skills to be transferred to a new character.
If the name is an issue you could allow "changed" players to display their old name in brackets under their new name for a while.
