I disagree with people who are against melding.
Sure, AF is easy to acquire.. through quests, and things that aren't RNG. But.. isn't that how most gear should be? And just because it's easy to acquire, and largely common, that isn't any excuse for it to be ****ty, especially with how unique and awesome most sets look.
As previously stated, AF is largely useless with so many different ways you can meld common gears these days. AF needs to be revised, or something has to happen to actually make most pieces viable. This could come in the form of either materia or gathering specific materials to upgrade each piece.
Just off the top of my head, here's an example: We have Gallant Coronet, Cuisses, Sollerets, Gauntlets, and Surcoat.
This gear is very basic and is enough for most amateur PLDs to get by, but what you need in order to progress is gear that is substantial. Bring in quests that not only add to the job questline, but also allow for ease-of-access when it comes to upgrades. Perhaps each quest is gathering certain materials to help increase the effectiveness of each piece, or killing a certain enemy to imbue that enemy's essence into the piece, thus making it stronger.
If they wanted to give people more customization, they could make it like augments from FFXI, but instead of it being random you can branch off to different choices of NMs or materials to give your gear different effects such as more HP+, enhancing certain abilities, adding accuracy, and the latter. To top it all off, make it dyeable or colorable to some degree, adding more to customization.
I'm a PLD, DRG, and WHM. I like the gear I worked for - why not allow me to work more for it to make it more on-par with things like Darklight or double/triple melds? It certainly doesn't have to be as effective, but give us SOMETHING to make the pieces stronger and more tolerable.
Off-topic: For anyone who doesn't know, Rina is your typical GameFAQs poster. Feel free to ignore anything she says, as it's usually not constructive at all.. and just plain irrelevant.

If skill were added to the system, certainly, acquiring the most powerful materia and melding them into gear should make it the best. But as far as I'm concerned, and especially being the broken player (cash-wise) that I am, I want my gear to be viable without spending hundreds of thousands, if not millions of gil on single pieces only to see them blow up.. and all of my progress goes to waste. RNG that involves strong chances of losing expensive items should NEVER make something the best.

no1 wants to listen to someone that whats to shutdown every idea they hear. Maybe u don't like these idea mainly because u didnt come up with them you're self or there not you'res i agree with wolf i have seen u on these forums some great ideas out there and u like that's stupid. Everyones idea is worth a chance so get over you're self and let people post there idea's and maybe see if you can think of an idea in that head of youres and stop being a troll
Anyway meld to the gear is an gd idea but there would need to be some real big price to pay to do it.
If you remember back in FFXI there was a ring you got from CoP and if you tossed it away you couldnt get a new one for 30 day's
Let's say new dungeons come out with some AF materia ok great, you can meld up to lets go 3 times to each piece but starting chance 50% since its a rare gear and meant to be only one of ifs kind. if you do pass the first meld go youif you fail you got to wait from 10~30 days before you can get that piece back. That would be a gd punishment to trying to overpower yourself.
I can't see the dev's bring this to game they may pass our idea's on and will prob put a lot of though into it, but don't forget something like this need's a lot of though put into it so no1 crys over something being done wrong. Like really if you wont to get powerful in a game you got to pay the price or work your little ass of to get that goal. We just can't have 3000 people running about on PLD with + 2500 DEF.
Also read some1 in here said something about upgrade like back in FFXI also great idea,
Great idea man tho but need's a lot of planning.
(Drunk When i wrote this so sorry if my english/writting sucks)
EDIT!
Just saw another post about melded gear should be number 1 gear i don't think so, Most people in this game dont brother making money so there only going to maybe in you're LS 3 people or so with pure pimped out melded gear gear. Rare Drops should be the best gear in the game but hard to get meld should be come close to it. Plus most people anyway will maybe mix Droped gear with melded gear just to suit there needs with what ever set-up or job there playing.

Guess what? That's too bad so sad for them. Quad+ Melds should by all rights be the est gear till we get a content base the size of FFXI at minimum. If you don't want to make money or put in the effort to obtain melded gear, SE shouldn't cater to that mentality.
Hmm..no, pretty sure there's more people who are working towards it/accomplished it than there are those who are too lazy to bother with it.so there only going to maybe in you're LS 3 people or so with pure pimped out melded gear gear.
Melded gear can have melds on certain stats that dropped gear doesn't cover. There's a limit on what a piece of gear can have stat wise, especially in terms of drop gear, which is why no MMO as of yet has released that "perfect" piece of armor for every slot.Plus most people anyway will maybe mix Droped gear with melded gear just to suit there needs with what ever set-up or job there playing.
This is the main purpose of melded gear, you have not only alternates if you put in the time and effort, you also have the ability to cover drop gear weakness in x slot.
Don't want to bother with it? That's your choice, but that doesn't make it a bad idea outright.

I.. wh.. that's racist!
On topic:
Let me conjure an illustration
Like Firon said, AF was meant to be the iconic thing for you, things for new player, fresh from their 1st 50, who still dont have lots of money and willing to do some sort of end game. They by all mean incomparable with double even triple melded player, who willing to burn their pocket for double/triple melded
Now being able to meld/custom it would ruins it purpose for 1) it would need some fair amount of money or skills to do it, which new player dont have, 2) it wouldnt be a "uniform" for corresponding job because everyone has it differ, and lastly, 3) for god sake its storyline item. please hands off from story line item
And I dont mind for upgrade, like some series of quest later. But please make it uniform with other player, because it suppose to be a job "uniform".
Im sorry, I dont understand any of your rambling
sober up, dude
EDIT
great idea is not great idea untill its proven
I'm sorry but gear, if it's actually *gear*, should be practical. If it was only supposed to be an iconic look, why does it increase abilities, have one or two really good pieces, and have superior defense? It was supposed to be a viable set of armor, but is definitely not. As it stands, a single melded set of craftable gear, which is laughably easy to obtain, is hands down superior to what you find on AF.
Really if they just wanted to add an iconic set, they should have made it a costume and called it a day. The fact that its supposed to be a set of armor is kinda a joke lol. Especially when we were told it would compete with double melds. Bahahaahahaha. I mean given the lore behind AF and everything its mighty sad that its so useless. Why give me armor if I can't legitimately wear it for endgame content? That was just fail design.

Wait, I don't get it. Why not, I dunno, just meld normal gear? It it because you just want to look SO EPIC or some shit? AF is fine as it is, stat-wise. FFXI had useless AF pieces as well. It's nothing new and it's not supposed to be the BiS.
I think this is where the problem lies..people expect overpowered gear with every addition, this is the wrong direction and why itemization in almost every MMO is shit, especially early on because they only focus on "overpowered end game gear."
If you played FFXI before you'd know that the 'iconic set' ended up getting numerous iterations with different uses, with the final one (Empyrean) being the strongest. It's just the first set of armor for new jobs.
The problem with your logic here is, why can't I use my level 15-20 Shposhae gear and rock the shit out of end-game?Why give me armor if I can't legitimately wear it for endgame content? That was just fail design.
