Also, the people who put things in the wards for 999,999,999 gil are doing so (I think) because that particular item (and its purchase history) won't be searchable unless someone's had it up for sale in the wards. I think the FFXI AH worked similarly to this, which is why sometimes you'd see someone selling an item to themselves in its history.

No, they do it for a free inventory slot.

People just did it in XI to show off that they had the item, which was a waste of gil...but whatever, their loss.

People tried the same in XIV with the new materia, like the Store TP and Acc materia, it dropped pretty quickly when people realized not everyone is a dumbass and will buy 4 STP and 4 ACC materia for 9 million.

An empty retainer stays in the wards just as long as a retainer who's selling something. So yeah... I think they're doing it for the inventory slot.
