How do Lalafells hear?

I do not understand this.
Lalafells ears are covered when they wear most hats, with cloth or leather. How do sounds reach their ears? Do Lalafells hear via something else?

It was the same thing with Tarutarus in FFXI, I never understood this.
Does anyone know?

We dunefolk lalafel have developed a tongue that has special sensors on it that allow us to pick up vibrations. This is how we hear, I don't know about the plainsfolk lalafel.

Even though this is true, it just seems like a bad idea in general to muffle the sounds. Why not cut out holes?
