Personally, I think it's the way to go, call your pet you suffer a stat drain as maintaining the link to your pet takes effort. Don't call it and your stats are normal. Your pet makes up for it w/ AAs of it's own as well as some unique abilities that you can have it use.
It's not a 'It's a my way or a high way.' Retort that shot your idea down. It's the fact that it essentially follows the exact mechanics of what they are doing with the Chocobo system - So making it would be redundant at best. The best alternative to the idea would to be to allow Wyverns under the same "Mount that fights by your side." System as a Chocobos. Obviously that means your Wyvern wouldn't be able to fight with you everywhere, but it would also means that the Dragoon does not have to be re-balanced to include Wyverns.

Just shaving off some of Dragoon's damage to accommodation a Wyvern, even if it's a choice, is not balancing it. And to create an 'option' for a Wyvern that is tied to Dragoon's base mechanics means they'd have to work twice as hard to balance the Job as they would for every other Job class in the game - which would draw away from Pet Jobs who should have more attention paid to them.

We've got a simple and easy alternative to the demand for Wyverns, we don't need to muck it up by trying to bind it to our Job specifically.

To save myself the writing, I'll just quote myself.

Seriously, quit asking for things that are counter-intuitive for the game. Forcing the developers to re-develop jobs they've already gone over again just because you feel you're not in the minority (when it is a high probability that you are) is fool-hearty.

Best way to have cake and eat it too is already being developed, and is likely a far superior system than just shaving 10% off of our damage to have more clutter on an already effect-crowded screen.

If they do implement Wyverns, I do not want the system they had in FFXI, I want the system to actually have depth to it. However, the more depth they add, the more they would have to take from Dragoon to do it. And I personally do not want to be nerfed any more (We've already have had to be buffed once substantially and even that's not enough to cut through the bias.)

So, let's keep it on a separate system.

We can just as easily go off the coming Chocobo system, slap a "You can only call this pet while on the Dragoon Job." requirement and be done with it. It's exactly the kind of 'buddy' system a Wyvern would deserve to have and it gives the option for Dragoons who don't want it to opt out, and allows the developers to balance the Wyvern on it's own, instead of having to counter-balance it by hurting Dragoon.

Thumbs up for catching the reference.

I guess i would be ok with it if it was an optional part of the buddy system. But others without Dragoon may not like that Dragoon gets a job specific buddy.
