"Rewards commensurate to time spent" is impossible, to be fair. We're investing 35+ hours a week pretending to do things in exchange for imaginary currency. All we're really hoping for is satisfaction with reconciling that; because at this point what's going on is we're investing 35+ hours a week and getting an imaginary kick in the jewels.

No thanks to the maps/scrolls. Getting around and doing my job are very basic things - I'm glad they're basic features of levelling and existing in Eorzea in XIV. Sinking time to get those basics are archaic mechanics of a time gone by when play needed to be artificially extended between CD-ROM releases. We now have broadband and digital downloads and instantaneous distribution of content via direct patching.

In fact, half of the things I see people clammoring over for "difficulty" and "experience" are just nostalgic whinings for anachronistic mechanics that were only in place to sink your time or act as a digital Skinner Box to ensure subscription/addiction.
