I think stats and talents undermine the entire idea of customization. As an MMO, and true to all the good and bad that comes with it, having racial traits and bonuses kills the joy of being able to really look the way you want. I mean, people will ostrasize others for a few HPs.I think there is not need for all or nothing races like friendly vs unfriendly when species can be resolved simply by the tribes/clans or different types of a single race that we currently have now.
Instead of purely cosmetic and lore variations it can be stats and talents too.
I know the whole ability to be any class comes with a disadvantage to this type of system, however and eliminates the ability to roll a uniquely specialized character factor vs jack of all trades.
Granted the Armory systems would help negate this "slightly" but only so far as when your race and favorite Class/job line up. All in all, i think adding anything to races that are stat or skill driven will cause way more problems then the likely marginal bonuses you'll recive from it.
I enjoy the idea of good lore seperation in some ways. However the lore for FF14 in so far as the area we are currently in is much more of a melting pot. The differences are more in alignment with the city states your associated with, then any xenophobic exclusion or semi-isolated tendancies.
What i like about this is from a lore and RP standpoint, it helps seperate preconcived notions of how some one should act, based on how they look and allows people to choose via what they associate themselves with. Which is actually a good life lesson for the real world too ^^
