The problem is catering to DoL/DoH jobs on the main scenerio quests. SE said in the beginning they want to give players the option to be able to play a crafter/gathering class and still get most out of the game without the need to level up DoW/DoM jobs.

I think they should branch out and make a storyline for DoW/DoM that involve battles similar to CoP bcnm's. Challenging fights that require a group, not "You can either fight this Ixal or challenge the hostile beastmen to a friendly game of PARLEY"

It's nice that crafting/gathering does have more of a role in this game than XI, but I would like to see another storyline branch away from the 'fight or parley' option that has challenging BC fights.

    ^This.

In my opinion CoP was the height of FFXI's success, at least for me. It was the first story in the game that actually felt worthy of the Final Fantasy title. I completed CoP way back when it first game out before they took the nerf bat to it and when I thought back on this, I realized what one of the main components that (at least for me) was missing from XIV.

    The feeling of accomplishment.

I can't tell you enough how many times FFXI made me feel like I truly earned a victory and it felt great. It felt like a true accomplishment. I loved the challange. I may have cursed and hated it in the moment but when I look back on it and think "Yeah... sure, it took us several tries and virtually countless exp to beat CoP 8-3. (the pot fight) But when we finally pulled it off I literally jumped out of my chair in excitement."

This is what I miss most from FFXI. Good friends, epic adventures and a feeling of accomplishment.

A lot of people whined and moaned about FFXI's difficulty and it not catering to the casual player and while I agree with many of those arguments, I have yet to play another MMO that gave me that same sense of accomplishment that I felt with FFXI. And I'd really love to see that return in XIV in the form of challenging instances, HNMs and engaging, challenging story-related missions.

I guess what I'm saying is, I really feel like XIV has been dumbed down in an attempt to make it accessible to everyone. I can't do any of the main story missions with my friends and the story missions themselves have been... well, mediocre at best thus far and I'd really love to see FFXIV succeed and do the Final Fantasy name justice.

I'm just having a hard time taking it all seriously. I mean, can you imagine asking Promathia or Bahamut to sit down and have a friendly game of parley with you in lieu of destroying the world? I sure can't.
