From Yoshi in response to the community backlash with the equipment dye changes some time ago. Confirms the upcoming 24-32 color ID system for all equipment.
The reason that I have avoided speaking in detail about colors is because the spec for creating color variations has been performed simply through texture changes. I have mentioned this in a different thread, but I would like to have 24 or 32 colors available for use on any gear item. I would like to accommodate the demands of all players; players who would like to wear all red, players who would like to wear all black, and players who want to have a different color for each piece of gear equipped.
However, if we create all of these colors using texture only, whether on the PS3 version or on a low spec PC, we would face some serious technical problems. Thus, we would like to make adjustments to the item data files themselves.
This is a bit technical, but we will perform color changes by changing the material color and separating the dyed colors from memory. We were able to confirm this with QA recently. Once this has been finished, players will be able to dye their gear in any color. Using the recipe “finished product + dye,” players will be able to freely change color variations as many times as they want.Source: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...l=1#post385755Eventually, gear stats and color will be re-implemented as unrelated entities (data will be eased through a Color ID system)
Inaaca you are my hero!! Actual proof! Plus 1 dude. Cannot WAIT to get even more color options than we have now. Picture how awesome it will be if ls's start utilizing this to come up with color swatches for their members!? Thanks so much for finding this. You have made me a very happy Galka.Managed to dig this up after some looking.

Personally I think the current dye system stinks. The colors are so faded that everything looks off white. Not my idea of what SE said they were going to do with the new universal dyes. At least the old dye system made some nice bright colors.
The new dye system hasn't been implemented... they just changed it so that it didn't affect stats anymore.
Reading Yoshida's post on color is not very helpful... It is over a year old and the changes he proposed were for 1.19 and 1.20 which we already have. All we got were pale pastels for some items. The other solution he mentions: rewriting how items are defined so that function and power depend on shape and color is a side data bit is the only way they can actually fix the color problem. They did not give us more colors in 1.20, so that means the redefinition of all items is going to wait for 3.0 or later. This is not what Yoshida's letter talks about. He needs to respond to this issue again.
