And last I checked, we don't play the game in CGI soooo >_> wth are you guys whining about. A trailer at E3 wasn't going to do shit, especially without a lot of information behind it.
Here is one answer...it effects game play because by losing out on the chance to show their media to a large audience..people instead are not going to know about it when they may have. So we may possibly have a lower population then SE could have gotten. That effects game play in many ways. It shouldn't make or break the game but they won't be reaching out to as many people as they could by making this choice.

Releasing the site as a whole should draw more attention then a 3 minute trailer depicting something that won't occur during 2.0. What good will the trailer do now if they show it, people will just say oh cool guess I"ll just wait for that to be released. However, if you have more background based on said game people may be more willing to try it out.

From the letter itself it sounds like this is how they were originally going to release the information:
Trailers, open up site with some basic info, update bi/weekly.

Instead they are now doing this:
Releasing a site covering all the information they would have released in stagger.

Now you might be wondering why is this better then a trailer. Well it's quite simple, an MMO is about many concepts, if you want to catch the eyes of a player you have to show them everything and then hope said player finds at least one thing they can grasp onto and draw interest from. It's very possible the trailer could be seen as lackluster to some because it may only show a fragment of things they have planned and then when the site open up it would show even more stuff they aren't interested in so by doing it that way they risk losing customers since they may not be willing to continuously check the site of a game that had already failed once just to find out if there's something they may be interested in.

They have a higher probability of gaining an audience through a completed site then they do of showing a trailer that only depicts the future of 2.0. If SE plays their cards right they should definitely put a page depicting all the "one time" only stuff before 2.0 hits since that would be a really good way to catch the attention of players wondering if they should check out the game. If they can draw players in by saying hey you can only do this once and then also draw them in by seeing what will be revealed in 2.0 they have a good chance of improving their population once E3 is complete and is prolly the main reason why they added the May 31st limit to Legacy.
