Sure is third party website when the url ends with .square-enix.com. It's only a subdomain...

Being skeptical is one thing, claiming that its a scam is another. There is nothing wrong with asking in such cases indeed. But jumping to conclusion without any evidence is just wrong :s

How many scam emails have people gotten for FFXI where the web address was only slightly modified to look like a subdomain?

Like I said, people are skeptical because stuff exactly like this has gotten accounts hacked and gutted in the past.

This. AFAIK every suspicious e-mail is scam until proved wrong.

Off course that's a common phishing technique. But if you are able to read properly and if you take your time before clicking, there is just no risk at all.

I've seen enough RMT tells in XI with square-enix being written sqare-enix, square-eenix etc. Or square-enix.[random domain].com. I perfectly know how the system works.

The email header proves you wrong. That's the only accessible way for the average user to confirm that an email is coming from a trusted source. The sender email address means nothing however. (Any 13 y/o kid can spoof a sender address and start sending emails ending @square-enix.com if he wants to).

Now there is always one risk, if the source has been compromised and cannot be trusted anymore (i.e. someone's got control of SE's servers) but if we start thinking that way, absolutely nothing can be trusted...

So rather than spreading misinformation and claiming that something is a scam, try to educate users on how to distinguish a scam from a legitimate email. That can also be useful for more important things in your life than the MMORPG you are playing.

There is always a risk on the internet, no amount of time taken will eliminate that.

I never said this was a scam email, I said (repeatedly) that you can understand why someone would be skeptical of this kind of email.

Also, your attitude is exactly HOW people get scammed in the first place. "Oh I'm careful and can read unlike all these other idiots it won't happen to me" and two weeks later "WAHHH MY ACCOUNT GOT HACKED, SE YOU BETTER DO SOMETHING!!!".

There are too many hacked accounts because someone was stupid enough to open up and respond in some fashion in another to an email. Any time someone asks, I will call it out as a scam because it's bad business practice to link in email unless otherwise requested by the end-user as there's always too high a chance of it being a scam.

A newsletter with HTML could still be faked by a good enough hacker.

You're just naive. But whatever, at least it won't affect me. Sucker.

I never say it cannot happen, I said that based on data I have on my possession (last time I checked you have nothing so you're not even entitled to give a valid opinion anyway), this email is legit. Since I do not have OP's data in my possession, I explained what should OP check to reach that conclusion. It's a logical process, I am deeply sorry if you do not understand it :/

What leads to people being hacked is lack of education when it comes to security sadly Lot of studies did prove that. And that is also why companies rather invest into seminaries/meeting to teach their employees basic security rules to avoid issues rather than spending all their security budget on developing software countermeasures and chaining their employees by filtering websites they can visit etc.

If you are good enough to fake the email header data, believe me you won't waste time hacking XIV player haha. That got to be joke.

Also, RE: "XIV gils worth nothing"

People that claim this have no clue about supply & demand. Because you don't think gil isn't worth buying doesn't mean other people don't.
Sorry we're just not living in the same world. For a real hacker, that is low profit. Actually it's a real hassle, because of all the alternate steps to turns gil into real money, without the risk of being tracked down etc.

You just have no idea on how hackers are selling security flaws and how the market is for that. XIV gil next to that is only for script kiddies, at best.

(Feel free to continue without me going to bed now /mylife. I hope that by tomorrow, some GM or Rep will have confirmed that this email is legit My apologies to the OP if the thread turned into a war. I just hope that at least, you managed to get the information you need among all these posts Sorry!)

I'm deeply sorry you think you have a right to comment on the validity of my opinions. =o

I played FFXI for 9 years, FFXIV for 2, and a myriad of other mmos in between for varying degrees of time. I've never once had any of my accounts hacked. The closest I've ever come is when I gave my accounts to friends once I stopped playing the games. (Not FF games obviously.)

Oh and for like the fifth time, I never said the email was a scam in any way shape or form. I have (repeatedly) stated that there's nothing wrong with the OP and others inquiring whether or not it is if they themselves are unsure.

When I was Taught in School, there are safe sites and Hackable sites: Its not even about how they word their site ( though that plays apart in spotting a hacked site). Like when your downloading a Document, .xml are not safe while .doc is safe to use. Antipika is right on 1 thing. Education= Knowledge. But then she took it a little to extreme calling people who don't know a thing about it a child but we won't go there.

Anywho, I have the Book in front of me for List of Safe sites and not safe sites if you like me to spread the knowledge =).
