You have proof "everyone" saw it? a Statistic of sort? In fact I only think a handful of people saw it, because most people just forgot FFXIV exists.. If they show that and E3 ( which everyone watches E3) People will see this as a New game, (though it really isn't just an expansion of sorts).
I think SE is overestimating how much "the world" already knows about FFXIV. Beyond the scope of the current FFXIV community, people don't really know what's going on with this game at all. When I talk about this game to my friends and tell them SE is totally remaking the game, they are like "what? really?"
The majority of the gaming world have no idea what's happening with this game, and I think going to E3 with a trailer and saying "hey look, it's different now" just to get people interested in the game wouldn't have been a bad idea. The hype could generate some more subscriptions to the current version which would keep people interested while more information "trickles" in.
I think if they don't go big at E3 people are going to get the impression that they havn't really changed much or that the big changes are still a long ways off. They need to look like they are ready for the world to give it another try, not like they're still working on it.

I think passing on E3 is probably a bad idea. If they don't go big at E3 people are going to get the impression that they havn't really changed much or that the big changes are still a long ways off. They need to look like they are ready for the world to give it another try, not like they're still working on it.
SE has always been cocky. So much that they thought that any game with "Final Fantasy" on it would be a huge success, no matter how much it lacked. They got proven wrong with XIV. Obviously they are stilling thinking that with the news we got. They think that because XIV is a Final Fantasy title, then it must mean the whole world is following it.....
Fixed that for you.
Edit: no one has been able to link me to something that says FFXIV will not be at E3, I rest my case.
I agree with this 100%.I think SE is overestimating how much "the world" already knows about FFXIV.
