Can one benefit just from handing in those specific items? I can't seem to track down any more information on why I should do this besides participating in the battles...

So, in other words, not unless you happen to spend tons of anima. Great. Well I guess I'll just hoard this crap and/or sell it if the price is right.
Actually, if you turn in the supply items you get points: 1000 per 10 items turned in. These points increase the "Phase" of hamlet defense. If you turn in anough and score Top 20 points you can get an extra chance at an item from the captain after defeating hamlet other than the chest every particpant gets.
Yep, we had one of the top 20 in a group I did and they got the Militia Sledgehammer from the NPC before exiting. It benefits everyone the more people turn stuff in as the defense level rises, the enemies get tougher, and the rewards are (supposedly) greater.Actually, if you turn in the supply items you get points: 1000 per 10 items turned in. Also since you DO have a renewable source of anima, you can spend it a lot more freely. Ever since this came out I've been saving a lot of travel time.
