I have given up on reading any text for story in this game simply because I am not interested in deciphering this language. Look down on me all you want, but all the story efforts is being wasted on me simply because you are not making the text easier to read.

Grats on using a buzz word from the 90's. You must really be an avid reader.

Look at the classics... If you took entire passages out of, say "Much Ado" then there would be serious holes and confusion because just about every paragraph has an impact on the story.

In this game you could remove entire NPCs and it not effect the story in the slightest.
Making these NPC speeches have more of an impact on the story as opposed to lengthy speeches that have no bearing on whats going on.... I guess that is meant to cater to ADD kids also.

I know it is almost instinctive to berate someone's opinion if it is contrary to your own, but the truth is, everyone's opinion matters. You aren't sounding intelligent and well read, you sound pretentious

My girlfriend just spams through all the text because of how long it is. Even I have to agree that most of the dialogue could be edited down to a paragraph or two from each encounter and it would be a lot easier to swallow. Verbose =/= quality.

Edit:

I also think they should put some thought into at which point in the questline they decide to deploy the walls of text. Maybe right before an exciting fight or encounter is not the best place for a long winded speech, just sayin'. Save it for the turn-in, and more people will read it.

Just an afterthought, because I think my original comment makes it seem like I don't like the speech of the characters. I really do like the way that the characters speak. I don't have trouble following what they are saying, and I find the Lominsan Pirate-talk to be charming. I did MRD Lv.36 quest today for example and it had some pretty witty phrases in it.

To me it's just the sheer AMOUNT of text. I have the basic gist by the end of the first paragraph, usually, and then I'm starting to get a little bored. By the fifth, I'm really wishing I was on my way to my next objective. So, yeah, just setting the record straight.

I enjoy the wordsmiths work in the writing of FFXIV but it really needs to be said in less text. I miss a lot of side quests stories because I'm just not willing to sit there and read though 10-15 pages of text. It's good to see this will hopefully be changing in 2.0

But seriously, as long as nothing from the Japanese text gets cut out I'm fine with it. You don't have to overdo the frosting on the cake, but you better serve me the whole cake. I don't pay bakers to shortcake me. I mean shortchange me.

But in this case, the icing is too thick to be enjoyable. I can only, *only*, understand the Lominsan pirates by imagining up a voice for them and "listening" to them in my head. Seriously, there's more apostrophes in a single conversation than makes up for all of the missing/mistaken apostrophes from my entire class in my senior year.

It probably wouldn't be so bad if the prose was more direct. Instead of going off on a flowery tangent of "e'er"s and "c'nnot do eet, Cap'n"s, maybe just say it modern-like and to the point and adjust the conversation afterward for accents.
