I made a spreadsheet documenting every single named death in the entire game.

Across the game there's been A LOT of deaths, but I feel like over time, people just accept that as a generally implied pile of bodies; that at some point we just started going on vibes more than anything concrete.

I didn't want to go on vibes; I wanted to see if I could find some facts! So I spent a couple weeks combing the game's script and counting up every single named death I could find, to see what sort of trends and numbers there actually are!

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

    Turns out there's a lot!

I might've missed some (there's a lot of game to go over), so I'd appreciate any extras that people can see are missing, but if you can't: hey, let's spend a bit looking at any other neat stats we can find, like which expansions have a much higher or lower bodycount than you'd expect! ...and which single quests are clearly MASSIVELY overachieving.

Seriously, Heavensward The Quest, chill out.

Impressive. Seeing it all laid out like that is.... well it's hard to draw conclusions.

For what it's worth, I also made a video going over my own general findings.

    https://youtu.be/O3hia9rLIyw

Basically, on top of seeing some generally interesting statistics like the 70/30 gender split of named deaths being about equal to an earlier study of the game's gender split in dialog (thereby showing that there's not really a gender bias in deaths, it's just a reflection of the game itself underrepresneting women), the two things that really stood out to me are the significant dip in MSQ deaths between Heavensward and Stormblood, and that the death stats don't really sync up to, like, the communally-agreed tone of respective expansions; Shadowbringers' MSQ has less named deaths than Dawntrail's, despite each expansion's respective reputation.

I had my own feelings and conclusions about why those things happened, but those were the things I noticed!

People have also asked about the statistics of how many people were specifically killed by the WoL; I actually was recording that, but didn't exactly have any conclusions about it, so I'll be making a video on that once I can make heads or tails of that result.

That's some really cool data! Years ago I did a similar experiment, but didn't just do named deaths. I counted the corpses. It was something like 44 in base ARR alone.

Yeah, the reason I didn't do that is because as the story goes on it gets more and more difficult and more and more nebulous in criteria.

Just eyeballing it, I'd say that the Ghimlyt Dark is the point where it becomes unfeasible, and Endwalker is the point where it becomes outright impossible between Garlemald, Amaurot and the Dead Ends. While I think named deaths are a useful and important metric to track for storytelling reasons, one of the big reasons I picked that metric is for pure viability; names are always countable in a way that corpses aren't.
