Creative Studio 3: Thank you for a game with no AI. PLEASE keep it that way!

Nowadays, it's impossible to escape AI. (I mean machine-learning or generative AI, not traditional game design CPU behavior code.) It's in our phones, it's on every website, and using it is required in order to keep up at work. Students use it to cheat, teachers use it to grade, employers use it to screen resumes. It's taking jobs away from artists and software engineers who are starving because they can't find work. It erodes the social skills of the young by being more compliant and present than other humans would be, increasing loneliness. I hate AI.

But, there is one place I can escape to where there isn't any AI: The world of FFXIV, a world I've been happily living in for 12 years.

I suspect in the near future Square Enix will ask Creative Studio 3 to put AI features into the game. Maybe an assistive help chatbot, or maybe a machine-learning-based RNG algorithm, or maybe an interactive NPC backed by an LLM.

Putting AI into this very-carefully-built social experience would erode away the glow from player interactions, and destroy the happy relationship between the players and the game's creators.

If you are working on FFXIV or have any influence over its direction at all, I plead you: please, please don't put such features in the game. This world is my one last bastion from the AI hell that is ruining my life. I don't want my Warrior of Light to go away due to AI, too, like so many other things in my life.

I am 100% sure that AI would have written a better story than what most of dawntrail was.


Though realistically, the main thing I could see AI being the most useful is in just basic concept arts and such. Someone having an idea for something and describing it to the AI, then have it draw a like hundred versions of it and then start building something based off of them.

AI isn't universally problematic. It's a tool. If used as a tool, it's good.

If used to replace labor it's bad.

Just to give some examples:

- It can read over code and point out critical mistakes and errors, especially if you provide context for what to look for. This goes beyond just syntax errors that would come up while coding. For example, it could help SE identify why they have certain issues with their code that prevent them improving game systems, and contextualize them in a way that the developers might not have been thinking about them.

- It can provide suggestons for implementation approaches.

- Both WoW and FFXIV have a feature that adjusts gear (mostly) for different races, automatically. The difference is that WoW confessed that their's uses AI.

- They didn't manage to make certain hairstyles due to polygon limits. Perhaps AI could achieve it within the polygon limits, considering there is AI that can make models based on just a picture.

AI has helped me so much with programming tasks. It doesn't replace me as a programmer. It is a tool that I use as a programmer and I understand and review every shred of what it produces and sometimes adjust it. It saves me time figuring out an approach for implementation when the entire task might otherwise take me all day. It saves time reviewing documentation.

They actually admitted they used AI upscaling for the item/action/hotbar icons when upgrading them for the PS5 release.

They already have said they will be making use of AI, but not in a bad way. They are just going to remove time-consuming repetitive tasks, such as where Quality Assurance have to run against walls for hours to make sure that there is an invisible wall preventing you from escaping the map and falling under the terrain, which will allow them to test actually fun stuff.

It depends on what exactly it is. Some people like to use "AI" vaguely to make it hard to classify, but people are generally fed up with the modern GenAI such as ChatGPT, Grok, etc.
A lot of people will disregard the legal and moral arguments, so to look at the pragmatic side, a lot of GenAI work is sloppily implemented by higher-ups at companies. It can't be trusted to be free of errors or to even understand its assignment, so it ends up requiring human oversight regardless even though it was meant to streamline tasks.
And then there's the matter of seeing how copyright will unfold. It's likely many jurisdictions will end up disallowing the copyrighting of GenAI-generated content based on existing legal precedents, making it difficult to implement for a company.

I had more to say, but I think much of it would lead to squabbles if some types of commenters were to swing by.
