It would be better. Currently, I lose my weapon glam every time I upgrade my weapon and I can't be bothered to reglam all my job weapons every time. It's annoying, but I do want the glam on the weapons, there are just too many jobs.
Transmog is extremely limilted when you can't change the shoulders on the chest... I hope one day we'll be able to change shoulders on chest pieces

So basically what FFXI has had for 10 years

And yet XIV devs still act like they'd rather die than give us a functional transmog system

For or all intents and purposes the plates still apply appearances to gear items. And they couldn't shift to the XI or WoW's style unless they just lock it to a class/job and/or find a way around the weapon problem.
So you make a glamour plate and attach it to a job gear hotkey set you have saved. When you get a new piece of armor, you update the job gear set and then press the hotkey. Done, you’re reglamoired. I don’t think it works outside of safe areas for whatever stupid reason, but there’s a way.
Count the number of available jobs. Then count the number of glamour plates. Notice a problem with your approach? So you make a glamour plate and attach it to a job gear hotkey set you have saved. We are finally getting a glamour update in 7.4 with them removing job and level restrictions from glams. I wouldn't except another update to the system until 9.x
