I agree with you that SE is 100% directly or indirectly responsible for the current ddos fiesta. Preventative methods such as reevaluating the ISP or hardening the datacenters should be considered years ago.
But is dropping connections / only allowing established connections enough if the SYN packets themselves are consuming the entire bandwidth of a server?

Time we start counting the days of how many times SE has ignored us.
That is kind of a loaded statement. SE is sadly pretty notorious for being terrible with communication so we will never know if they are listening and trying stuff in the background, listening and ignoring us, or just not listening at all...

Another DDOS attack. Nov 12, 9:38 CST
I mean, if it's a ddos or not.
If somebodies house keeps getting robbed, do you blame the burlgers- or that the owner refuses to install locks or security alarms?
I'm gonna blame the owners first for not having security measures and the robbers after for committing the crime.
I hope you know how terrible of an analogy that is to make in any situation and how little it even applies to this one. We are the people who are robbed. We, the players, are having our time stolen. Not SE. They are the city, the police, who is supposed to protect us. In a fair world the robbers would be punished and stopped because at the core of things they are the ones to blame but in digital spaces that rarely happens.

SE flat out doesn't care. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if all these problems are coming from the people who got laid off.
