I also remember a time when "privilege" was quarantined to a small part of the Internet and not part of the default mode of communication. I never said there was no politics online, it's just that you can very easily avoid it and it isn't everywhere. Even Gamergate itself was a minor phenomenon. Now it's become the default lens through which people understand games.^Guy who thinks there was no culture war in games in 2015. Spot the gamergater.
If you thought there was no politics online in early 2010s, when there was an ongoing global economic recession following a massive financial crash, it's because you were living in a bubble and you were privileged enough to be unaffected.
You live under a rock and now you're scared of the sun. You're so privileged and coddled you don't even know what privilege means. Bless.I also remember a time when "privilege" was quarantined to a small part of the Internet and not part of the default mode of communication. Counterpoint, we live in such blissful times, that a bit of discomfort feels like the end of the world.I think we're just living in an age of malaise, especially in the United States.
It has to do with the reduced attention span. Because of constant distractions from digital media, we can't imagine people would hold grudges for more than five seconds.I figured, when you look at how completely nonsensical the Endwalker/Dawntrail story was, that's partly because we can't imagine that kind of society in real life anymore. Really, people just giving up their centuries of hatred because you offered them a steamed bun? That's ridiculous. It wasn't just because part of FF14's writing went downhill. I think it's also because this game is now situated in a very different culture and climate.
One can aruge that they didn't have the large playerbase as the game has now. More players, more exposure, and so a VA drama gets blown out of proportion.I mean, can you imagine anything like the VA drama happening during HW? I certainly can't.

I think it takes a severe level of bad faith to argue that the polarization right now is at the same level as the 90s-early 10s. Pretty much every expert agrees that it has increased, and that is affecting everything, including this game.
At the same time, you also didn't have so many people like Grummz who make a career out of video game culture war topics that split the playerbase. Back then about the closest you get is a bunch of parents saying MMOs are demonic; but that hardly divided the people actually playing them.

I think a big part of things is the accessibility of information. We had to hear about those things through more less-immediate channels. Now there are people who can find platforms on social media or Youtube and it will reach millions of people. I agree with Exmo that the polarization was always there. It just wasn't as advertised to as many people. At the same time, you also didn't have so many people like Grummz who make a career out of video game culture war topics that split the playerbase. Back then about the closest you get is a bunch of parents saying MMOs are demonic; but that hardly divided the people actually playing them.

I just want Power Slash back, man.
That thing had the coolest animation...
Hell, just give me Stormblood DRK back wholesale it was peak

The DDOS made me feel my limit with this game. I too yearn for the good old days. I miss them. I miss my friends that played regularly with me. I miss when I had an active FC. I miss when I felt excited to log in and do a roulette. Now I feel like I'm just going through the motions. Then the constant DDOS sorta just killed my mood further and further. Now I just feel so much frustration towards this game.
