We don't know the entire naming scheme from every race on the Ninth. It's entirely possible that Thundran is, like, an au ra and that's just what their names sound like over there. Or hell, even just a miqo'te; I believe we saw some of them in the Alexandria dungeon, but the only ones we've met in the present day are Turalian by lineage.

This is linking back to a discussion on your discord a couple days ago, but it's possible that CS3 was planning on miqo'te being another Alexandrian race when they populated Alexandria, but then backed away from doing it when they realized they'd need a Ninth-specific miqo naming convention to localize (and had already spent resources on a Tural-specific convention for the Hhetsarro). That's just a theory at this point, but the part where the name doesn't fit the three existing conventions we know of for the Hyune, Eldite, and Milalla, and that no other playable race appears in Alexandria beyond those three and the smattering of miqo'te, means that there's... a very small something to go on, though admittedly it isn't much.

I imagine that if upcoming content is going to focus more on the Ninth, we'll likely have an answer soon enough.

On Thundran specifically: for anyone able, has someone checked the (I assume original) Japanese? It could be that a name was just copy-across localized and it seems strange in English but fits better to the setting in the original language?

It's just what you would expect from the name in katakana: サンドラン, "Sandoran".
