For the interior you can buy walls and flooring of your desired style and/or choose the "minimalist" design to remove the pillars.

I believe it also allows you to choose the actual neighborhood styles (pillars, bottom of wall trim, stairs, etc.) for the interior now too from the same menu, but only the minimalist option will have no pillars.
