I really don’t see it, felt really good to me and never slow paced at all. You can switch party members anytime you want and play with ATB to remove turn based, gambit also there to be probably best combat system, and the story never felt rushed or slow.

Either way I don’t see the connection with your argument about Vaan and how slow FFXIV is

For varying reasons, some people dislike Vaan being more of an observer than the main character, and some dislike that to the extent that they will write off the story or the game in its entirety.
