I'm glad Meracydia isn't in 8.0 *SPOILERS*

When I heard Meracydia wasn't going to be in 8.0 I breathed a sigh of relief.

Dragon's might be an iconic representation of the fantasy genre, but it's gotten to be a point where we almost don't see a single expansion without them being featured somewhere (with some extents being extreme and others being lesser).

At a glance, here's how often we've dragons on our screen (often pivital characters in a story):
ARR - Binding Coils of Bahamut, Bahamut Trial, Keeper of the Lake, Crystal Tower
Heavenward - Heavily and centrally used throughout
Stormblood - Shinryu, Omega Raid, Wyverns + Drakes appearing in zones
Shadowbringers - Rarely used, but dragonkin representation is shown in Lakeland, Ill Meg, Kholusia and the trial mount rewards
Endwalker - Frequent again in the MSQ (Vrtra, Azdaja etc) and in Ultima Thule
Dawntrail - None from memory

It's pretty clear we've explored dragons extensively but the idea of any future expansions heavily featuring them makes me bored beyond relief. They've been given the spotlight enough.

What do you think? Do you like dragons and want to see more? I am just a dragon racist?

Off the top of my head, in DT Vrtra and a bunch of dragons make an appearance to defend Tuliyollal from S9's army. Other than that, I don't really remember dragons being around for Dawntrail.


When well-written, dragons are often my favorite characters in the game. I don't think there's anything wrong with them being featured if they're well thought out. I think having a break from them and letting the writers clean up some of the messes from DT's MSQ and hopefully jump into a more polished storyline is great for us.


I feel the same way about the Allagans tbh, somehow everything is always due to them so I'm glad we're not going to Allagan Ruins part 23542378: Electric Boogaloo anytime soon LOL

Sure, we had a couple of dragons, but not a dragon expansion. Even Heavensward was more focused on just two or so dragons and mainly about the people of Ishgard.

But saying that we explored dragons "extensively" just because we met some or had a couple in the other extensions, would be the same as saying that WoW explored dragons extensively after Cataclysm. And then came Dragonflight.

Im more glad that they arent tackling Meracydia, because of the current talent level of the writing staff.
I think it would be severely lackinh, and a waste of a great location.

Besides, Meracydia is a lot more than just dragons. But with the current staff? Instead of the people hinted by Sophia, Sephiroth and Zurvan. We would probably get recoloured beast tribes. The Banu Banu, Zahagin, Boblins and Doogles

I'd love more dragon stuff, but it's one of those things where they'd need a different angle than the ones they've used so far for the dragons. I mean, if there are dragons there that view it as a dragonsong war against the extinct allagans it's not gonna work.

We've also been to multiple simple settlements of dragons such as Dravania and the Churning Mists, arguably Azys Lla given they caught so many of them and experimented on them there, and Ultima Thule. And then we had an example of a peaceful dragon co-existing with humans in Thavnair. So they'd need a new idea.
