What's the point of the Chocobo Saddlebag?

It's literally an inventory expansion with many limitations. You don't even need to have the Chocobo around to access it.

Would be nice if it was gone and the regular inventory expanded with those slots, or at least - remaining as it is - could be treated like regular inventory items, e.g. materia and dyes being able to be used from there. I would actually make a nice "Dye Bag" if it worked that way.

EDIT: Damn, posted in the wrong forum, but point still remains.

Tackle box for fishing bait, but without the restriction of it being only for bait.

I opened mine up for the first time in months and found a massive stash of dyes past me had cleverly thought to organize. I was both happy and angry.

I use it very often myself. I store dyes I use often for glams, gear that I want to put in my glamour dresser next time I visit my squadron (if you put it in the saddlebag, it will prevent you from accidentally donating it to your GC if you're spamming turn-ins), unfinished relics/relic materials, random deep dungeon/exploratory zone odds and ends...

Basically anything that I don't wanna lose in my retainer's voidgate of an inventory, that I might need when I am not near a bell or for temporary storage of certain items.

The game is somewhat blind to the saddlebag, so you can also use it to carry 3 treasure maps on you at the same time (one deciphered, one in your inventory, one in the saddlebag)

My FC buddy has his about to burst from relics that he manually glams onto his weapons. Most people I know typically store dyes and their personal assortment of random bits and bobs.

For those who use it often, you can set a keybind to open it from the Keybinds menu, along with many other useful things. I think it's comfortable!

My understanding is that they made a mess of programming the inventory either in the initial setup or the rushed redesign of 2.0 and it's too complicated to untie the knot that would allow expansion of the main inventory, so they have to work around it.

On the upside, it gives us an extra place to stash "unique" items so we can carry multiple maps and such.

I am one such person who uses it for relics exclusively, because where the hell else am I meant to go with them T_T I can't add them to my glamor dresser who is nearly at 800/800 slots so like.

The point of it is to get around technical limitations that prevent them expanding the inventory itself. The inventory is carried with you into duties, whereas the saddlebag is not. Behind the scenes, that means the data doesn't have to be transferred to the duty servers.

The saddlebag is carried with you to other worlds and data centers, while a retainer is not due to being tied to the marketboard on your homeworld.

That's the difference between the saddlebag, retainer and inventory. The differences are technical behind the scenes, and this was their workaround to give more inventory without it having to transfer to duty servers or be limited like retainers are.

Ah, all ends in sphagetti it seems. Maybe those were PS3 limitations?

I wonder if they can actually expand the saddlebag itself if the inventory is not possible. But just making stuff usable from there like dyes, materia, glamours, (outside of duties) would be a nice QoL.

Since there's some odd limitations when you can or cannot move items between the inventory and the saddlebag, I'd wager there's a problem with indexing items/slots being limited, and they recycled something that is also used for other UI components for the saddlebag's inventory system. So you can move stuff between it and the main inventory, but you are limited while, say, having a vendor open or while melding or so. As those UIs also utilize the same indexing space.

Since the issues all seem to stem from transferring data between physical server machines, I think that it has nothing to do with PS3 and everything to do with poorly thought out infrastructure design, that didn't consider issues like this or didn't find a work around to traffic issues involving network, database and data transfer.

In the case of retainer inventory I think that is purely the fact it is tied to retainers which are too entangled to a single world, making a "cross-world marketboard" not feasible. They specifically told us they explored a cross-world market board and said they can't manage it, so they gave us World Visit instead.

They absolutely can and in fact they do, if you pay them money for the companion app. It adds an extra tab to the saddlebag.

This is also possible, it would seem, since they do it in Island Sanctuary and Cosmic Exploration. You have an entirely separate inventory, similar to Key Items.

Speaking of Key Items, they may as well use most of that to extend the inventory. Nobody has more than 10-15 key items at any one time and certainly not anywhere near 70 and the other 35 in the tab next to it.
